Lost in all the reports about the assassination of Charlie Kirk was another school shooting, this time in Colorado. A male student died after wounding two of his peers at Evergreen High School. This is just another senseless shooting in a school, costing another young life. Let’s take a look.
Evergreen School Shooting
The student killed in this shooting was the gunman who turned the gun on himself after wounding two fellow students. Dispatchers received the first 911 call at 12:24 PM. The sheriff’s office issued an “active assailant” alert for the Evergreen High School area at approximately 12:40 MT. School superintendent, Tracy Dorland, spoke during a press conference afterward:
“I am devastated to share this news with you, and I’m also angry that no child should ever face this kind of danger, and no community should be asked to absorb this kind of pain,” she said.”
These words echo the feelings of all Americans.
What Will It Take for Our Elected Officials to Act?

That is the question we have all been asking. What is it going to take for our elected officials to take action to stop these school shootings? Every elected official has something to say after these events. They then move on as if it’s not their problem, that is, except for the families of the victims. Hubert Humphrey, former U.S. Vice President, said in 1977:
“The moral test of government is how that government treats those who are in the dawn of life—the children; those who are in the twilight of life—the elderly; and those who are in the shadows of life—the sick, the needy, and the handicapped.”
I agree—every level of government earns an “F” for failing to protect our kids. I’m sure today some will blame guns, others mental health. There is plenty of truth on both sides, but there is little action to do anything to solve this issue. I am beginning to believe that our governments don’t think they own this issue! They most certainly do! We must force action—don’t let them forget the children. I urge everyone to contact your elected officials and do not stop until they take action. You can find them at USA.GOV. We need urgent and decisive action at the federal level to get this process moving. You can contact the President and Vice President at:
The Catholic View
Jesus sums this up nicely in Matthew 25:40:
“And the king will say to them in reply, ‘Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.'”
And again in Matthew 18:6:
“Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a great millstone hung around his neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.“
Going Forward
The assassination of Charlie Kirk yesterday highlights just how dangerous the world is today. We cannot allow this dangerous world to continue to exist in our schools. In a previous article, I suggested we use the Military and/or the National Guard to protect these schools until a permanent solution is reached. The debate between gun control and the Second Amendment rights is not going to be solved quickly, as evidenced by the lack of progress to date. KEEP THE PRESSURE ON YOUR ELECTED OFFICIALS. THEY MUST ACT AND ACT NOW. Parents must also keep close and constant contact with school officials to address this problem. Our kids’ lives depend upon it.
