The temple as a source of life is the key theme for the readings this Sunday, November 9. The gospel reading is from the book of John. Let’s take a look.

Gospel Text John 2:13-22

Since the Passover of the Jews was near, Jesus went up to Jerusalem. He found in the temple area those who sold oxen, sheep, and doves, as well as the money-changers seated there. He made a whip out of cords and drove them all out of the temple area, with the sheep and oxen, and spilled the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables, and to those who sold doves he said, “Take these out of here, and stop making my Father’s house a marketplace.”

His disciples recalled the words of Scripture, Zeal for your house will consume me. At this the Jews answered and said to him, “What sign can you show us for doing this?” Jesus answered and said to them, “Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up.” The Jews said, “This temple has been under construction for forty-six years, and you will raise it up in three days?” But he was speaking about the temple of his Body. Therefore, when he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they came to believe the Scripture and the word Jesus had spoken.

First Reading – Ezekiel 47:1-2, 8-9, 12

Ezekiel sees water flowing from the temple, turning salty seas fresh and bringing life wherever it goes. This symbolizes that the temple is not just a building, but a source of healing and restoration. The reading states that trees along the river bear fruit monthly and that the leaves are for healing. This promotes the vision of divine healing.

Second Reading – 1 Corinthians 3:9c-11, 16-17

Paul shifts the focus from the building to the “temple” being the believer. Jesus is the foundation, and the Holy Spirit dwells within us. God will hold anyone who destroys his temple, the Church, or the body, accountable to Him.

Jesus drives out merchants from the temple, declaring it a house of His Father. He prophesies His death and resurrection: “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” The disciples don’t understand that He is talking about His body. Jesus Himself becomes the new temple—the place where heaven and earth meet.

Common Threads Across the Readings

The common threads across the readings are:

  • Sanctuary as life-giving: Whether physical (Ezekiel) or spiritual (Paul, Jesus), the temple is a place of healing, holiness, and divine presence.
  • God dwells among us: In the city, in the Church, in Christ, and in each believer.
  • Transformation: The temple is not static—it purifies, restores, and multiplies life.
  • Call to reverence: These readings challenge us to honor God’s dwelling—whether in sacred spaces or within ourselves.

About Dennis McIntyre
In my early years, I was a member of the Methodist church, where I was baptized as a child and eventually became a lector. I always felt very faith-filled, but something was missing. My wife is Catholic, and my children were baptized as Catholics, which helped me find what I was looking for. I wanted to be part of something bigger than myself, walking with Jesus. I was welcomed into the Catholic faith and received the sacraments as a full member of the Catholic Church in 2004. I am a Spiritual Director and very active in ministry, serving as a Lector and Eucharistic Minister and providing spiritual direction. I have spent time working with the sick and terminally ill in local hospitals and hospice care centers, and I have found these ministries challenging and extremely rewarding.
