A new and growing threat to children is occurring on the platform called Roblox. Platforms that attract children also attract scammers, groomers, and other deviants intent on harming our children. Parents must take an active part in monitoring their child’s online activities as these threats continue to grow. Let’s take a look.
What Is Roblox?
Roblox is a massive online platform where people—mostly kids, teens, and creators—play, build, and share millions of user‑made games and virtual experiences. It’s not one game; it’s an entire universe of games, social spaces, and creative tools.
Roblox is best understood as three things at once:
- A Game Platform
- Millions of playable experiences: adventures, role‑playing worlds, simulators, obstacle courses, sports, horror games, and more.
- Popular titles include Adopt Me!, Brookhaven RP, Dress to Impress, and many others.
- A Social Space
- Players hang out, chat, explore worlds together, and customize avatars.
- Works across PC, Mac, iPhone, Android, Xbox, PlayStation, and VR headsets.
- A Creation Platform
- Anyone can build games using Roblox Studio, a free development tool.
- Creators publish their games to millions of players worldwide.
- Some developers even earn real income from their creations.
Unique Aspects of Roblox
Roblox is a global virtual universe where you can play games, create worlds, socialize, and express yourself—powered almost entirely by its community.
- User‑generated games: Endless variety; new content daily.
- Cross‑platform play: Friends can play together on any device.
- Avatar customization: Clothing, accessories, animations, and emotes.
- Creation tools: Anyone can learn to build games.
- Massive global community: Millions online at any moment.
Safety & Parental Controls
Roblox provides the following safety and parental controls:
- Content filtering.
- Moderation teams.
- Parental controls and age‑based restrictions.
- Voice and text chat limits for users under 13.
Roblox’s huge popularity drives many parents to use its safety controls. Even with those controls in place, documented cases show that predators have attempted to groom children and scammers have targeted them online.
Roblox Incidents To Date

News investigations and law enforcement reports have identified:
- Adults attempting to contact minors through chat.
- Attempts to move conversations off-platform (a major red flag). Across 80+ consolidated civil cases, predators start contact on Roblox, then move children to private messaging apps (Discord, Snapchat, Instagram) where moderation is weaker. This is the most common approach to harming kids. Evidence includes:
- Initial contact via Roblox chat
- Relationship‑building in games
- Intentional migration to private apps
- Escalation once off‑platform
- Rare but real cases of exploitation.
- Roblox cannot technically stop a child from going to another platform; however, it does detect and block attempts to share contact information and attempts to lure kids off‑platform inside Roblox.
Roblox reports an average of 77 million users per day and reported over 13K incidents to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) in 2023.
Grooming attempts Follow Predictable Patterns Across All Platforms
- Private chat or friend requests from strangers: Roblox allows friend requests, which can be misused.
- Attempts to move the child to another platform, e.g., Discord, Snapchat, Instagram, or text messaging—the biggest red flag.
- “Roleplay” games with unmoderated private servers: Some experiences allow private rooms where moderation is weaker.
- Voice chat is restricted but not foolproof.
It is important to remember that in the past two days, there have been two cases decided against Meta (child exploitation and safety practices in New Mexico and child mental-health related in Los Angeles), and one against Google related to child mental health. The platforms have limitations in protecting the kids, but the juries in the two cases found the platforms liable. Whether that is the case here with Roblox is not clear. Still, they are currently facing multiple lawsuits in the United States alleging that the platform failed to protect children from predators, harmful content, and unsafe interactions. These cases argue that Roblox’s safety systems and moderation practices were inadequate, exposing minors to grooming, exploitation, and inappropriate material. When you look at these legal cases and the rapid rise of networks like the 764 network, the threats against our children have never been greater.
How Can Parents Be Proactive?
Here are some key proactive strategies to try to avoid your child becoming a victim:
- Stay involved in your child’s digital life — know the apps they use and who they talk to.
- Please keep devices in shared spaces whenever possible.
- Normalize open conversations about online safety, shame, and manipulation.
- Teach kids that no adult or peer should ever ask for secrecy about online interactions.
- Use parental controls to limit contact from unknown accounts.
What Should Parents Do If They Suspect Contact?
- Do not delete messages — they are evidence.
- Do not confront the predator directly.
- Do not blame the child — shame is the predator’s weapon.
- Immediately secure devices and, if safe, take screenshots.
Fast contact is critical to the apprehension of these predators:
- Contact the local Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Field Office or call the FBI Online Tip Number at 1‑800‑CALL‑FBI (1‑800‑225‑5324)
- Call the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) Cyber Tipline at 1‑800‑843‑5678.
- Call the Local Police.
The FBI has hundreds of active investigations into 764 and other social media networks, and rapid reporting helps them intervene.
The Catholic View
Jesus would view the Roblox situation through the same lens He used for every environment where children, power, and vulnerability intersect: fierce protection of the young, truth‑telling about hidden dangers, and a call for adults to take responsibility rather than shrug at risk. His response would combine compassion for children, accountability for platforms and predators, and wisdom for parents navigating a digital world. Roblox’s documented 13,600+ exploitation cases in 2023 would grieve Him deeply.
Roblox’s open, user‑generated world creates:
- Exposure to strangers.
- Grooming attempts.
- Scams.
- Occult or violent content.
- Addictive design.
- Unpredictable social interactions.
Christian safety guides highlight these exact risks for families. As disciples, we must:
- Expose hidden dangers.
- Confront systems that harm the vulnerable.
- Call out leaders who failed to protect their people.
Scripture repeatedly commands parents and leaders to guard, guide, and shepherd the young. Roblox requires:
- Discernment.
- Boundaries.
- Parental involvement.
- Wise stewardship of time and attention.
Christian parenting guides emphasize the same: Roblox can be used wisely, but not passively. Roblox, like all social media companies, has a moral responsibility to protect our kids. The company markets itself as safe for kids, yet:
- It cannot fully moderate its massive user‑generated world.
- Children encounter strangers and harmful content.
- Exploitation cases continue to rise.
Roblox’s protections are helpful but insufficient without adult oversight.
