The readings for the Seventh Sunday of Easter highlight two central pillars of the Christian life: prayer and unity. Set in a time of transition, after Jesus’ departure and before the coming of the Holy Spirit, these passages reveal how believers are called to remain grounded when the future is uncertain. Through prayer, they stay connected to God; through unity, they remain strong as a community. Gospel Text – John 17:1-11a
“Father, the hour has come. Give glory to your son, so that your son may glorify you, just as you gave him authority over all people, so that your son may give eternal life to all you gave him. Now this is eternal life, that they should know you, the only true God, and the one whom you sent, Jesus Christ. I glorified you on earth by accomplishing the work that you gave me to do. Now glorify me, Father, with you, with the glory that I had with you before the world began.
“I revealed your name to those whom you gave me out of the world. They belonged to you, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Now they know that everything you gave me is from you, because the words you gave to me, I have given to them, and they accepted them and truly understood that I came from you, and they have believed that you sent me. I pray for them. I do not pray for the world but for the ones you have given me, because they are yours, and everything of mine is yours and everything of yours is mine, and I have been glorified in them. And now I will no longer be in the world, but they are in the world, while I am coming to you.”
First Reading –Acts 1:12-14 – Waiting in Prayer and Unity
In this passage, the disciples have just experienced the ascension of Jesus. They return to Jerusalem, uncertain about what comes next, yet faithful to Jesus’ instruction to remain there. Instead of acting on their own or scattering in fear, they gather together in one place. The text emphasizes that they devote themselves to prayer and are united in purpose.
This moment is significant because it shows the disciples in a state of preparation rather than action. They are not passive; their waiting is active and intentional. Through communal prayer, they strengthen their faith and their unity. This teaches that important transitions in life often require patience and reliance on God, and that prayer is a way of anchoring ourselves while we wait.
Responsorial Psalm – Psalm 27:1, 4, 7-8 – Trusting God in the Midst of Fear
Psalm 27 expresses a deep confidence in God’s protection and presence. The psalmist declares that the Lord is his light and salvation, leaving no room for fear. At the same time, the psalm contains a heartfelt longing to dwell in God’s presence and a plea for God to hear his prayer.
This tension between confidence and longing reflects our human experience of faith. Trust in God does not remove struggle or uncertainty in life, but it reshapes how one responds to those challenges. The psalm invites believers to seek God continually and to find courage not in circumstances, but in their relationship with Him.
Second Reading – 1 Peter 4:13-16 -Faithfulness in Suffering
This reading speaks directly to believers who are facing hardship. Instead of offering an escape from suffering, it reframes suffering as that which unites believers with Christ. The passage encourages Christians to rejoice in their trials, because sharing in Christ’s suffering leads to sharing in His glory. Rather than being a sign of failure or abandonment, suffering becomes part of the journey of faith. It is a call to remain steadfast, to live with integrity, and not to be ashamed of one’s identity as a follower of Christ. In this way, suffering is connected to hope and future glory.
Gospel Reading – John 17:1-11a – Jesus’ Prayer for His Followers
In this Gospel passage, Jesus offers a profound prayer to the Father just before His Passion. He speaks of His mission, gives glory to the Father, and prays for His disciples. He asks that they be protected and remain one, even as He prepares to leave them.
This prayer reveals the depth of Jesus’ love for His followers. He knows they will face challenges, and He entrusts them to God. The emphasis on unity is especially important—Jesus understands that their strength will come from being united in faith and purpose. The passage also defines eternal life as knowing God, highlighting that faith is fundamentally about relationship.

When viewed together, these readings form a powerful and coherent message. The disciples in Acts model a community grounded in prayer and unity as they wait for God’s promise. The psalm reminds believers to trust God even in times of fear. The letter of Peter calls for perseverance in suffering, pointing toward future glory. Finally, Jesus’ prayer in John reveals the importance of unity and the sustaining power of a relationship with God.
