Can You Save Money With Starbucks K-Cups?

Can You Save Money With Starbucks K-Cups? June 18, 2012

Single cup coffee makers have changed the way people make and enjoy their daily cup of java.  Instead of making an entire pot of coffee just to watch it go to waste, coffee drinkers now have the ability to brew a single cup with the Keurig K-Cup single cup brewers.

With the average cost of a K-Cup hovering around $1 on average, the single brewing system can save coffee lovers a buck or two compared to coffee shop prices, not to mention the convenience of brewing your coffee ‘on-demand.’

For Starbucks coffee drinkers, the prospect of saving money with Starbucks K-Cups is promising.  For about a dollar a cup, your Keurig can brew a great tasting cup of Starbucks or Tazo tea right in your kitchen.

While most people pick up a box of their favorite K-cups at Walmart or the grocery store, there’s a better way to get your Starbucks fix while saving a few dollars along the way.

Saving Money on Starbucks K-Cups

Use My K-cup With Starbucks Coffee

For about $15 on Amazon, you can purchase the My K-Cup reusable Keurig coffee filter that lets you brew any coffee of your choice.  You just need to add the coffee ground of your choice and rinse it out after you use it.

A 12-ounce bag of Pike Place roast coffee grounds is about $8 and will make at least 12 cups of single brew coffee.  Each K-cup holds about 2 tablespoons of grounds.  One tablespoon equals ½ an ounce, so the bag allows for 24 tablespoons or 12 cups of single brew coffee.

The Savings?

A pack of 54 Starbucks Pike Place K-Cups on Amazon cost about $48 or about $0.89 a cup.  Using the Starbucks coffee grounds in your My K-Cup will run about $0.67 a cup.

Ok, so saving $0.13 cents a cup isn’t anything to write home about, but it is a 25% savings.  But, remember that you have to add in the cost of the My K-Cup.  At $15, your reusable filter would pay for itself in about 3 months of using it (about a cup a day).  Of course, you need to purchase an actual Keurig coffee maker, but we’re assuming that you already have one in this calculation.

Are K-Cups Worth the Price?

The bottom line with the K-Cup is that you’re paying for convenience.  Yes, you do save a little money by brewing at your home, but you’re paying for the convenience of little cleanup, and a personalized cup of coffee anytime you want it.

Before you go out and buy the first box of K-Cups that you see at the store, be sure that you think about the per cup price.  It’ll vary from brand to brand and you might be able to save a few dollars by purchasing your K-Cups on Amazon or eBay.
