Today we’re giving away Jon Acuff’s book Quitter.  Quitter was released yesterday and is Jon’s third book (behind Stuff Christians Like and Gazelles, Baby Steps and 37 Other Things Dave Ramsey Taught Me About Debt). If you missed the book review of Quitter, be sure to check it out.  It’s definitely a book I’d recommend to anyone who has ever considered quitting their job to start something new. I’m a visual learner and love to read infographics (like this one on mint.com) and use interactive sites and calculators. A friend of mine showed me a visual tool the other day that displays a graph to show how your tax dollars were spent. Apparently, Google had a contest a while back challenging developers to create a visual display of how our tax dollars were spent.   All the entries can be found here: www.datavizchallenge.org/explore Where Did My Tax Dollars Go?... Read more

I’ve been using Geico for the last 8 years and have never had a problem with their service or rates.  In fact, they’ve always been lower than other quotes, so I’ve stuck with them through the years This year during my financial spring-cleaning frenzy, I decided to make the annual call to a few insurance companies to check the rates.  I started with Geico and asked if there were any better rates or discounts, to which they said no.  Onward... Read more

If you saw the news yesterday, OIL took a dive.  The price of a barrel of oil dropped nearly 9%, settling just below $100 a barrel.  My question is this:  Will we see a 9% drop in gas prices?  It’d be awfully nice seeing that we’ve experienced a 30% spike this year in gas prices since February!  This puts us about $1.00 per gallon higher than we were this time last year. Unfortunately, I don’t see gas taking a drop... Read more

Today is the National Day or Prayer.  According to the website, the National Day of Prayer is “an annual observance held on the first Thursday of May, inviting people of all faiths to pray for the nation. It was created in 1952 by a joint resolution of the United States Congress, and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman. Our Task Force is a privately funded organization whose purpose is to encourage participation on the National Day of Prayer.... Read more

On the front page of Jon Acuff’s book Quitter is the line, “Closing the gap between your day job and your dream job.” I’ll admit, when I first saw the book I thought to myself, “Is this the Christian version of The 4-Hour Work Week or something?” I wasn’t sure if the world needed another ‘quit-your-day-job-so-that-you-can-pursue-your-dreams-book.’ But it wasn’t like that. Not at all. As I read Jon’s story about his journey through eight jobs in eight years and how... Read more

What is Supply and Demand? We’ve all heard the terms supply and demand. They sound simple enough, but there is one big distinction to make when referring to this overused phrase. Supply and demand are different than quantity supplied and quantity demanded. Here’s why: Supply is a measure of the availability of goods and services at all prices. Supply is affected by the cost of inputs, advances in technology, and other determinants of production. The quantity supplied depends on the... Read more

Do you have something in your home that you remember as that ‘one great deal!’ Or maybe there was a time where you were being really frugal and bought something used and have kept it for a really long time? My proudest frugal moment was three years ago when I purchased our current washer and dryer. My wife and were about to get married and I realized that we needed a washer and dryer. After looking through appliance stores, I... Read more
