The Triumphal Entry

The story of Palm Sunday is vividly told in all four Gospels of the New Testament: Matthew 21:1-11, Mark 11:1-11, Luke 19:28-44, and John 12:12-19. Despite slight variations, the essence of the story remains the same across these accounts. Jesus rides into Jerusalem on a donkey, a symbol of peace and humility, fulfilling the prophecy stated in Zechariah 9:9:

Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.”

This scripture teaches us the importance of humility and fulfilling one’s destiny. Despite being the Son of God, Jesus chose a humble donkey for his entry, symbolizing peace and approachability, unlike a horse which was associated with war and kingship.

Lessons of Palm Sunday

  1. Humility

Jesus’s choice of a donkey as his mode of transportation into Jerusalem serves as a powerful lesson in humility. It teaches us that true greatness is not about displaying power or status but about serving others and being approachable. Jesus demonstrated that the path to true leadership and respect lies in humility and service to others, as he later washed the feet of his disciples, further emphasizing this lesson.

  1. Fulfillment of Prophecy

Palm Sunday underscores the fulfillment of ancient prophecies, showcasing the faithfulness of God’s word. When Jesus entered Jerusalem on a donkey, he was fulfilling the prophecy of Zechariah, illustrating that God’s promises always come to pass. This teaches us to trust in God’s plan for our lives and have faith that He will fulfill His promises to us.

  1. The Fickleness of Public Opinion

The crowds that cheered for Jesus during his entry into Jerusalem shouted, “Hosanna!” which means “save us.” However, just a few days later, some from the same crowd would call for his crucifixion. This dramatic shift teaches us about the fickleness of public opinion and the importance of standing firm in our beliefs and values, even when others around us may quickly change their views.

Palm Sunday

Palm Sunday is not just a historical event but a source of valuable life lessons. It teaches us about the importance of humility, the certainty of God’s promises, and the need to remain steadfast in our values despite the changing opinions around us. As we reflect on these lessons, let us strive to incorporate them into our daily lives, living in a way that honors the teachings of Jesus Christ.
