Suddenly Republicans are pro-choice

After generations of opposition to a woman’s right to choose to end a pregnancy, some Republicans have suddenly decided that choice matters when it comes to getting the Covid-19 vaccination.

“I don’t believe that government should be doing all these mandates,” said Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla. “I think what the government should be doing is providing good information and let businesses and let people make their choices.”

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has taken it a step further by saying schools are not allowed to set their own rules about masks. He signed legislation prohibiting private businesses from requiring proof of vaccination.

“I’ve been very clear that a private business gets to make its choice, and you as a customer, an employee, you get to make your choice,” Scott told National Public Radio. “So as an example, I am very pro-vaccine. I took the vaccine. My wife took the vaccine. I am against government mandating these things.”

Unless you’re a pregnant 16-year-old girl in Florida, then Scott, and the entire Grand Old Party of hypocrites promote mandates controlling the girl’s choices.

These Republicans want a world where they control the reproductive rights of women while they also demand the right to choose to ignore sound medical advice concerning masks and vaccinations.

Of course, it’s more dangerous to be in states with Republican governors.

According to one study, Americans have a greater chance of getting Covid and dying, if the governor of their state is Republican.

The next time these Republicans crow about personal choice, ask them why they want to take away the reproductive rights of women, the ultimate personal choice and keep for themselves the right not to be vaccinated.

A woman holding a sign that reads, "My body my choice."

If these Republicans believe that they should have a choice over vaccinations, denying women the same choice over their bodies is blind hypocrisy on a breathtaking level.
