Since returning last Sunday from the four-day Courage/EnCourage conference, where I spoke about healing sexual wounds with the help of the saints, I have wanted to write about what it was like for me to witness the vital work done by the Catholic apostolate that ministers to same-sex-attracted men and women as well as their relatives, spouses, and friends. But I didn’t know what to say. There was something numinous about the experience. The deep devotion of the members of... Read more

[Cross-posted at The Dawn Patrol:] Ever since writing My Peace I Give You: Healing Sexual Wounds with the Help of the Saints, I have sought to give talks to those most in need of healing from childhood abuse or trauma. Last week, I had a unique and beautiful outreach opportunity when Philadelphia’s Project Dawn Court, which helps convicted prostitutes rebuild their lives, invited me to address its graduates. Catholic News Agency reporter Elise Harris interviewed me afterwards and wrote a... Read more

Readers of New Advent this morning got a surprise when, after clicking on a headline promising free downloads of Pope Francis’s encyclical Lumen Fidei for “Kindle, Nook, iPad, and more,” they instead found the following on the website of popular blogger/author Brandon Vogt: In the last couple hours, I’ve received a litany of emails from both the USCCB and the Vatican accusing me of “[violating] both civil and moral law” and “stealing from the pope” (actual words used) by making the encyclical... Read more

UPDATE: My “Morning Air” interview is now online! Listen here. I’m very thankful to Sean Herriott for giving me the opportunity today to speak on his Relevant Radio show “Morning Air” on how childhood sexual abuse affects men and on how those who suffered may find healing with the help of the saints. Here are links related to topics that Sean and I discussed: My book for adult survivors of trauma, My Peace I Give You: Healing Sexual Wounds with... Read more

This coming Saturday, June 15, is the feast day of Blessed Albertina Berkenbrock, whose story I discovered while researching my book of Catholic spirituality for adult victims of childhood sexual abuse, My Peace I Give You: Healing Sexual Wounds with the Help of the Saints. Blessed Albertina, who was twelve years old when murdered in 1931, is known as a martyr of chastity. Her attacker killed her because she resisted his attempt to rape her. Reading the saint’s biography on the... Read more

Ingrid Loyau-Kennett, the mother of two and former Scout leader who calmly confronted the Woolwich killers in hope of preventing further bloodshed, credits her heroic actions to her Catholic faith. The Telegraph reports: Around her neck, she wears a small gold cross, encrusted with rubies and diamonds. She is a practising Catholic and partly credits her faith for how she acted. “I live my life as a Christian,” she explains. “I believe in thinking about others and loving thy neighbour.... Read more
