The Greg Rubottom guest column on abortion I posted here generated heated  responses. Here are two unedited as they were posted online originally. One is reasonable and instructive. The other includes this line — “I’ll be over to this man’s house tonight to put a bullet in his head while he sleeps.“ The “put a bullet in his head” response is of the SNL “Weekend Update” Chevy Chase v Jane Curtin “Jane you ignorant slut!” ilk but even Chevy Chase never told Jane Curtin he’d “… put a bullet in... Read more

Sometimes our learning curve is forced on us, if not by God then by God’s angels say, by Mr. and Mrs. Parke. Being sent to Great Walstead School in 1962 (a boarding school for boys in Lindfield, Sussex, England) when I was ten was one such experience. Mr. Parke was the headmaster, and Mrs. Parke was both a teacher and his eagle-eyed helpmeet. She (like her husband) gave “her” boys opportunities that I came to fully appreciate only years later. In... Read more

I’m often asked about the Eastern Orthodox Church since I have been going to a Greek Orthodox church for the last 25 years. Since I come from an evangelical background I get the question “Why did you convert?” I didn’t. The word “conversion” implies the evangelical idea of salvation as a one-stop conversion-to-Jesus moment, AKA the “born-again” experience of passing from “dark to light.” But the Orthodox view of salvation is of a mysterious journey toward God. So I don’t think I was “lost”... Read more

“We are witnessing a dramatic transformation in the relationship between [American Evangelical] Christians and Jews, who are focusing now on the common values and the common future we both share,” Prime Minister Netanyahu (Quoted March 20, 2012 in “Pastor John Hagee’s Christian Zionist Enterprise Hits One Million Member Mark” Truthout)   Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressing Christians United for Israel Christian supporters with John Hagee in Jerusalem March 2012.   Having elevated the Bible — or at least the nicer bits that they like — to the status of a magic book  evangelicals  have demoted God. Their “god” is trapped in a book and kept somewhat like a tame rat inside the cage of “biblical inerrancy.” Since the evangelical/fundamentalists worship a book rather than God they can’t admit that the Bible has flaws and is just plain crazy in places. So they spend lifetimes working to make “sense” of... Read more

On the morning after the reelection of President Obama American Christians of a conservative-to-far-right bent typified by the leadership of the evangelical establishment and the Roman Catholic bishops have to admit that along with the Republican Party they have just been resoundingly repudiated. Since I was one of the minor nepotistic sidekick architects of the rise of the religious right in the 1970s-80s along with my late evangelist father Francis Schaeffer, (before I changed my mind and fled as I describe in my... Read more

Given my Religious Right background I’m one of the President’s most unlikely fans. Maybe that’s because I know the alternative– from the inside. I fear the alternative to the President — Far Right loons of the Tea Party/evangelical religious right ilk — and have never felt I had the luxury of being an armchair lefty critic demoralizing Obama’s supporters because he’s the only person who stands between the village idiots and us. Before he’d served even one year President Obama lost the... Read more
