Sometimes I get messages I struggle with and this is one such note. In fact, I’ve had several messages with very similar questions that I’ve found difficult to answer without advising the reader to end their relationship. I’ve tried to pump out a nuanced answer to this one for the better part of a week. It would appear GM has advice constipation because I can’t seem to get anything other than “Dump the loser” out. How do you deal with someone you… Read more

Hawaii. It’s tropical. It’s exotic. It’s romantic. The thing about Hawaii, though, is that it’s all a lie. It has the ability to make you feel as though you’ve left your white, suburban comfort zone but you really haven’t. Hawaii is every bit America as Houston is. It’s plastic; put-on; fake. Hawaii is the Happy Meal of travel destinations; a peregrine play being performed on a perfectly preened stage designed to make you feel as though you had the balls… Read more

Shalom, heretics! So, there’s a Rabbi, a priest and a Mormon blogger at HuffPost. I know that sounds like the beginning of a joke, but it’s the truth. Often, the triumvirate of meshugaas write pieces that conflict with all rational thought, and today we’re going to look at one such post. This one is written by the Rabbi, and he wants us to know about three mistakes atheists often make. I know, you’re thinking, what a kibitzer! but before you drop… Read more

Last week, my son built an Ouija board. He came tearing home from school on his bike, announced he was headed to a friend’s house and disappeared. Prior to this, he’d never shown any interest in telling or hearing ghost stories and had no desire to watch scary movies or shows. Every once in a while, I’d invite him to join his sister and I for a marathon of terrible horror movies. “Hey, Kiddo, wanna watch Gremlins?” “Nah,” He’d say…. Read more

If you’ve been following this series, you know that we have been hearing from a condemned man in Texas who may just be innocent. You can read the previous posts about Pablo here and here. I wrote back to Pablo and have since gotten a response. Before we get to that, though, some notes on this series: This post is part of a series on what it’s like to be an atheist in prison. To read other parts in the… Read more

In this episode of the Common Heathens podcast, Donovan and I answer some of your questions. Admittedly, these are our favourite episodes to do because we are afforded the opportunity to address what you want us to talk about. It’s especially fun to have some of you join us live as we stream this on YouTube and ask questions in the live chat. It always makes for an exceptional conversation and Donovan and I really enjoy ourselves interacting with you…. Read more

One of the major themes that seem to lace their way through all of the stories you send me, is how religion has a tendency to make you feel terrible about yourself. Week in and week out, I read stories from people who describe their previously religious selves as broken, ashamed and overwhelmed with guilt. These same people go on to use words like “free”, “content”, “whole” and “happy” to describe how they’d come to feel once they were free… Read more

I used to do magic mushrooms a lot. I know, I know what you’re thinking, but you seem so squeaky clean, GM! and it’s true; I revel in my own moral perfection these days, but as Miss Spears might say, I haven’t always been this innocent. I really loved magic mushrooms. I mean, how can you not? When they start to hit you, you’re awash with a warm delight – everything around you is simply enchanting. Colours become more vibrant;… Read more

Today, we get to meet a new inmate! He is also from Oregon, like two others we’ve heard from so far. First, my series blurb… This post is part of a series on what it’s like to be an atheist in prison. To read other parts in the series, click here. Some of these inmates have done things that, to many of you, will be unforgivable. I will be disclosing some of their names, so you can easily find out what… Read more
