This is Patriot Day. On September 11, 2001, I was working at Meijer, Inc. At this time in my life, I was married with three children and was the Receiving Area Team Leader at a local Meijer store in Michigan. This store sold TVs in an electronics department. They were lined up and all turned on like at an electronics store. That day was different. Most Americans (if old enough) can tell you where they were that day. I remember seeing the news cast across all TVs, no matter what channel they were tuned into. Regular programming was interrupted because something horrific was happening. It was the Twin Towers. Something was terribly wrong. America was under a terrorist attack. It was very scary. Many people lost their lives that day.

The Department of Defense Education Activity tells us that, “By a joint resolution approved December 18, 2001 (Public Law 107-89), Congress designated September 11 of each year as “Patriot Day,” and by Public Law 111-13 (April 21, 2009), Congress has requested the observance of September 11 as an annually recognized “National Day of Service and Remembrance.”

The Power of Remembrance: Honoring those Lost

When we pause on Patriot Day, we do more than remember events. We remember people. Mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, first responders and countless others whose lives were cut short. Their absence left holes in families and communities. Remembrance is not only about looking back, but also about recognizing God’s presence in grief and affirming His promise to be near to the brokenhearted. When we reflect on Psalm 34:18 (The righteous cry out, the LORD hears and he rescues them from all their afflictions.),  we know that God is with us and with all of those people who suffered and are still suffering because of that day.

Faith in the Midst of Tragedy

When tragedy strikes, fear and uncertainty can overwhelm us. It can seem like there is no good in the world, only evil. Yet, for those who follow Jesus, faith becomes the anchor. On 9/11, many turned instinctively to prayer, seeking God’s protection and comfort. In moments of chaos, our faith teaches us to rely not on human strength but on God’s unshakable presence. He is the One who calms our fears, giving us peace that surpasses understanding. Offering prayers along with remembrance provides comfort for a tragic filled day.

Forgiveness and Healing

Forgiveness is perhaps the hardest part of healing after such devastation. Yet Jesus calls us to it. Matthew 6:14  reminds us  that “If you forgive others their transgressions, your heavenly Father will forgive you.” Forgiveness does not mean excusing evil, but it means releasing bitterness so that healing can take place. True healing, both personal and national, can only flow when we release hatred and allow God’s love to transform us. It can be very difficult, but it is very necessary.

Unity and Service

After the attacks, America witnessed an outpouring of unity. Strangers helped strangers, communities came together and people served in extraordinary ways. Jesus commanded us: “I give you a new commandment:  love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another.” (John 13:34). Acts of kindness, service and compassion are tangible ways to reflect the love of Jesus in a broken world. It can be very hard to forgive horrific behavior and show love to the sinner, but God calls us to do it. Patriot Day reminds us that unity and service are not just responses to tragedy, but daily practices of Christian living.

Carrying Hope Forward

As Christians, our call is to live as people of hope. Hope does not ignore pain; it shines through it. Hope declares that God’s light is greater than any darkness. Patriot Day challenges each of us to ask: how am I carrying forward the lessons of faith, unity, and love into my everyday life? Am I living with the courage to forgive, the strength to serve and the boldness to hope? Remember Isaiah 41:10 , “Do not fear: I am with you; do not be anxious: I am your God. I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my victorious right hand.”

A Call to Action: Pray, Serve and Share God’s Love

As we honor Patriot Day, let us recommit ourselves to lives of prayer, service and love. Pray for those still healing. Serve in your community with compassion. Share God’s love boldly, not only in words but in action. In doing so, we become living memorials; walking testimonies of faith, healing and hope. This also helps us to remember why we celebrate this day. We celebrate for unity, strength  and the good of humanity.

Let’ Pray Together

Heavenly Father, we lift up all who were affected by the tragedies of September 11th. Comfort the brokenhearted, heal those still hurting, and remind us that Your light shines even in the darkest valleys. Help us to live as peacemakers, forgiving as You forgive, and serving as Christ served. May our remembrance inspire us to love more deeply and live more faithfully. Amen.
