Accidents happen, but that doesn’t mean they’re easy. You can improve your outlook by looking at it through a spiritual lens. Doing so allows you to view accidents as opportunities for spiritual growth.

What Is a Spiritual Lens?

Everyone sees the world differently, many of which people can’t help. Your worldview combines your life experience, education and the morals and beliefs you form over time.

Some see life through a lens of privilege, while others see it through struggle. Others see life from an urban perspective and some see it from a rural perspective. You might be a “glass half full” person while your friend sees it as half empty.

When you see the world through a spiritual lens, you trust the universe or a higher power will make things right in the end. Having a spiritual view isn’t seeing the world through rose-colored glasses, but it is choosing to have hope that things will get better.

The Impact of Accidents

Having an accident can be difficult regardless of its size. It can be physically and mentally draining when things don’t work out because of a mistake. This is especially true if you are involved in a car accident or other serious event that changes your life.

When these significant things happen, you must learn how to cope with them to move forward. Viewing an accident through a spiritual lens can help with that. If you’re able to believe that a greater power will aid your recovery, you’ll have more motivation to achieve your goals.

Changing Your Mindset

There are several ways to reframe your mindset to a spiritual one, but it can take some practice. It’s about embracing the things you can’t control and relying on something greater than yourself. You’re not alone and reminding yourself of all of the good happenings and the forces that brought them to you can help you turn a negative event into a positive one.

Make a habit of naming things you are grateful for, whether large or small. It could be for friends or family members, a good income or that you can have a warm meal. When you remember what you have, it’s easier to anticipate more good things happening.

Keeping a gratitude journal is a great way to get into the habit of seeing things through a spiritual lens. Each day, take a few minutes to write down a few things you are thankful for and speak your appreciation to whoever you can attribute them to.

Examine Your Thoughts

It’s easy to fall into a negative thought pattern that makes it hard to find the good in any situation. You can identify these thoughts by writing them down as you experience them.

A cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) tool called reframing can help you transform your problems into challenges. Throughout the day, pick a few negative thoughts to examine. Write them down and try reframing them into something positive.

Instead of “I’m worthless,” try “I’m in a rough place right now, but won’t be there forever. With patience and perseverance, I will get to a better place.”

One way to practice this form of thinking is by writing down unproductive thoughts. Unproductive thoughts have no use to you other than making you feel bad about yourself. Constructive ideas encourage you or help you think through a situation.

There are also CBT apps that allow you to do this process anywhere you have your phone. CBT Though Diary, CBT Companion and MindDoc all guide you through this process.

You can also identify the patterns of your thoughts by writing a stream of consciousness — when you use pen and paper, a word document or a note app to write or type anything that comes into your head for a while.

Forgive Yourself

Negative thoughts can come from not believing in yourself and doubting your abilities. The good news is you have the ability to forgive yourself for your mistakes and shortcomings, paving the way for a better future.

When you have faith in a higher power, you can believe it’ll lead you to a better tomorrow. The first step in allowing that hope to reach you is to give yourself the grace you hope to receive.

Elimination Perfectionism

It’s easier to be strong in faith when things are going well. Seeing things through a spiritual lens is much more difficult when accidents happen.

When you are able to accept life isn’t perfect, you can positively navigate through it. Everyone has unfair circumstances — some worse than others — but all hard to deal with. Don’t compare your struggles with others but address them individually.

Accepting that there are things you can’t control frees you to stop stressing about them and focus on what you can actively do to change.

Spirituality vs. Religion

Viewing life through a spiritual lens doesn’t mean you have to follow a specific religion. Spirituality connects to a force beyond human power that can influence and guide you to a better tomorrow.

Spirituality can mean believing in forces beyond you but not following an organized set of beliefs and practices. While religion is a group activity, spirituality is individualized.

Helping Others After an Accident

If you’re not the one dealing with an accident, there are ways you can help them view their experience through a spiritual lens without being overbearing.

Showing your support could be all the person needs to hope things will improve. Give them love, kindness and forgiveness when they need it. If applicable, provide them with resources for mental and physical recovery and lend a listening ear throughout their recovery process.

As much as you want to start giving them spiritual peace, leaving any beliefs or advice is best until they are ready to hear it. Allow them to vent about their frustrations and help them find things they can look forward to.

If they ask, confidently express your feelings and how you navigate challenging times. Share with them how viewing things through a spiritual lens won’t make their pain disappear but can help with moving forward.

Having Hope With a Spiritual Lens

Life can get tricky, especially when an accident happens. It’s easy to focus on the negative of the situation instead of looking at the opportunities ahead of you. When you look at accidents through a spiritual lens, you can have hope for a better tomorrow.
