‘Christianity Today’ & Ralph Reed Evangelicals

‘Christianity Today’ & Ralph Reed Evangelicals December 21, 2019

The 60 + year-old Evangelical magazine ‘Christianity Today’ recommends that Trump be removed from office because, in the words of its editorial:

“None of the president’s positives can balance the moral and political danger we face under a leader of such grossly immoral character.”

The 58-year-old Ralph Reed,  an Evangelical political consultant,  opposes ‘Christianity Today’ and continues to enfold Trump in pious arms.

I once had a bit of respect for Ralph Reed.  I introduced myself to him briefly in an elevator at the Republican National Convention in San Diego, 1996. I was there with a progressive non-profit organization monitoring daily events.  Now I’ve no respect for Reed because he has shown his true colors as a hard-bitten politico and nothing more than a politico,  despite a patina of piety.

Trump  IS  a deeply immoral man.  But here’s the shocking realization:  Ralph Reed and right-wing Evangelicals would embrace a politician who is even more immoral than Donald Trump if such a person could realize right-wing political dreams.  And they would do it as if the Bible directed them to.

They might already be thinking of the following Bible characters who were more immoral than Mr. Trump:

Noah was a drunk

Abraham pimped his wife as his ‘sister’

Abraham abandoned his son Ishmael and Ishmael’s mother

Nahar married his niece

Lot engaged in incest with two daughters, impregnating both

Lot also offered his daughters to a mob of rapists

Jeptha burned his daughter to cinders as an sacrifice to God

Isaac had a favorite between two sons

Jacob was an inveterate liar

Samson was a shameless womanizer

Moses was a murderer

Joshua was a murderer

David was a murderer

Elijah was a murderer

Elisha was a murderer, releasing two bears to dismember and devour 42 children

Gideon was a murder

Trump does not rise to the level of the worst of these Bible figures,  but Ralph Reed and hard-right Evangelicals would if necessary elect a man of  ‘biblical proportions,’  a man much, much worse than Donald Trump.

They would do it for political expediency.  They would do it to win at the game.  They would do it because, in their pharisaical minds, the Bible tells them so.

I could be wrong, but I don’t think the Left would promote and elect a profoundly immoral candidate, not on the level of Donald Trump’s immorality, and certainly not a candidate based on The Iniquitous Scale of Biblical Dimensions.
