By Ayesha Noor Editors’ Note: This article is part of the Patheos Public Square on Rites of Passage. Read other perspectives here. Every day when Hassan and I sat down to read the Holy Quran, we fancied the day of his Ameen Ceremony – the celebration of completing the first reading of Muslims’ Holy Book. We had everything planned out, from the lists of guests, to what kind of cake he wanted and where he wanted to celebrate his big day. Although... Read more

By Rasheed Reno America has many famous pastimes from such as baseball, football, and basketball to outdoor activities such as fishing, hunting, and camping.  All of these play a part in American culture, bringing a healthy spirit of friendly competition, camaraderie, or physical activity.  However there are American pastimes that are not so healthy and contribute little or nothing positive to American culture. Foremost among these is the consumption of alcohol. Consuming alcoholic beverages is intertwined with almost every activity in... Read more

By  Saima Sheikh Recently, American Freedom Defense Initiative or AFDI, which is co founded by Pamela Geller, hosted a cartoon drawing contest of Prophet Muhammad of Islam in Garland, Texas.  Unfortunately, there was a shooting towards the end of the event. The two gunmen injured a security officer but before they could harm anyone else, were killed by the on duty police officer. My thoughts and prayers go out to the injured security officer. I hope he recovers quickly from... Read more

By Saima Shiekh “Killing Jews is Worship that draws us close to Allah,” reads one such ad next to the image of a man in a checkered scarf. “That’s His Jihad. What’s yours?” This is the bus ad that will be displayed soon on New York City buses. This is a false and inflammatory statement.  Instead of blocking this false statement, the district judgein Manhattan ordered that the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) should display this ad citing, “Moreover, there is no evidence that... Read more

By  Saima Sheikh Recently, Texas legislature heard two House bills, HB 562 and HB 670. HB 562 deals with family code and prohibits foreign laws relating to marriage, divorce & child custody issues from entering U.S. courts. HB 670 is “Relating to the application of foreign laws and foreign forum selection in this state” and will ensure that judges do not base their decisions on foreign laws. Why are our legislatures fearful of foreign laws taking over American courts? I don’t think that... Read more

I remember standing at the DMV with my wife, who wears hijab, as the state employee berated her without remorse for wearing a hijab. I remember standing at the TSA security line at LAX while incompetent security singled out my wife and infant son to check his diaper for explosives–forcing her to stand up straight holding him for over twenty minutes. I remember leaving the hospital last summer with my wife and our second son minding our own business, and... Read more

April 9, 2015 marks 150 years that the Civil War ended. Apparently no one told Officer Michael T. Slager. Watch the video of Slager, a white South Carolina police officer, gun down Walter Scott, an unarmed black father of four, and you’ll realize something most every person of color in America knows: the Civil War may have ended 150 years ago, but a race war rages on in America. The question thus isn’t what, but why? Why is it that 150 years after... Read more

By  Rasheed Reno Easter is the day Christians worldwide celebrate the death and resurrection of Jesus—an event they believe is their means to salvation. It is not well known, but in Islam we also believe in the truth of Jesus Christ as a pure and righteous Messenger of God sent to the Children of Israel.  In fact, it is a requirement of Islam to accept Jesus and his Gospel.  The Quran, which is the Holy Scripture of Islam says: “When... Read more

By Saima Sheikh “This is America; you don’t have to wear that thing on your head anymore.” “You force your wife to cover herself” shouted a protester at CAIR Dallas event in January. “Once they get that established, we’re all going to be wearing hijabs,” Christine Weick said. “Women, come on, do you want this oppression coming upon you?”These are just few examples of recent incidences in America where Non-Muslims have expressed their phobia at Muslim women for wearing a... Read more

Connect with Qasim on Facebook and Twitter.   Mere hours after condemning the murder of three Muslim students at Chapel Hill last month, notorious anti-theist Richard Dawkins happily returned to spreading falsehood and hatred of Islam, tweeting, “Alas, criminal individual killers exist. But there’s only 1 ideology now that preaches the legal killing of dissenters. And it isn’t atheism[.]” In insinuating Islam “preaches the legal killing of dissenters,” Dawkins effectively states that the “criminal individual killer” Hicks merely did what Islam also teaches. This... Read more
