Or the day after, depending. I wrote before that my memory is of following the news reports, as East Germans left via Hungary and protested within their own country, and especially the morning news, the next day, reporting on the momentous changes. Later I wrote about the fall of the wall, and this dramatic change from the Cold War I had grown up with as the basic organizing principle of geopolitics, in the context of Obama’s verbal tic about History as a force. I have half a mind to ask my husband to write a “guest blogger” post tomorrow on his experiences at the time.
But in the meantime — what do you remember?
UPDATE: I talked to my husband. I had known that he was doing his military service at the time, in Mittenwald in the Alps, so nowhere near the border with the East, but I had still thought there would have been some reaction, some celebration in the barracks. But he doesn’t really remember anything.
