Day One (or day 597, but who’s counting?)

Day One (or day 597, but who’s counting?) 2015-03-04T07:43:30-06:00

Welcome to my world!  I’m excited to be blogging at the Patheos community, after about a year and a half of blogging on my own with a simple Blogger blog.

Happily, the tech staff was able to move all my old posts over here, so I invite you to plunge into the archives to see what I write about.

I am all over the map in terms of the topics I’m interested in.  Is Obama a Christian?  Does Islam need a Reformation?  When should you retire, and, for that matter, what should retirement look like in the future?  How, if at all, should the Catholic Church change to accommodate its membership decline?  What’s going on in Detroit?  You want opinions, I’ve got them.  And, yes, I’m pleased to have been invited to blog at the Catholic Channel, but readers who have followed me here from Blogger (and I hope some of you have. . . ) will know already that I’m fairly heavy on economics, politics, and social policy, and I don’t expect that to change.

Now, mind you, I try to limit myself to writing about things where I actually have something to say – I pretty much figure that anyone who reads my writing is also following the major Right/Center-Right bloggers, columnists and news sites, and if all I’ve got to say is, “Ann Althouse/Megan McArdle/Charles Krauthammer was soooo right when she/he said. .  . “ then that’s not much of a value-add, is it?  And there are some topics where, yes, I’m frustrated, everyone is frustrated, but I don’t have anything to offer; although, then again, there are times when I just really want to vent, and blogging is my platform for that, so as to not drive my husband crazy, or fritter away my time on comment sections of other blogs (where I generally just get irritated:  “I’ve got this great thing to say (whatever it is) and no one is listening!”), or write yet another letter to the editor.

You say you haven’t seen anything by me in your local newspaper?  Yeah, well, back in the days when I diligently submitted letters, I could never seem to make them pithy enough to make it into print.

But I enjoy this whole blogging project.  I like to imagine that, if I plug away at it, it’ll help me figure out some way of Getting Involved, in the real world, or even a career change, but, at the same time, my youngest is eight, and there’s homework to supervise, and dinner to make, and any number of things to do which make blogging a nice hobby while keeping my very-flexible day job.

I have also resolved to be more self-disciplined about blogging – proofreading and editing what I’ve written, trying to add images, finding the right link rather than “I read an article once that said. .  .”, adding tags to the posts, in general cleaning up posts that turn out to be a jumble of thoughts due to a tendency to think while, rather than before, writing.  Will I succeed?  Most of the time, whatever it is that I’m writing about, I’m too impatient for all the details, and want to pound my thoughts out and hit “publish” right away. So I hope you’ll join me on this endeavor, give me your reaction to my thoughts, however half-baked they may be, and develop a conversation.
