Dear Mr. Trump: they won’t let you win

Dear Mr. Trump*

After many years of success in the real estate business, you have stepped up to lead the nation out of its current economic woes.  You’ve recognized that illegal immigrants are a huge problem — they drain our finances and have committed crimes against American citizens, and the federal government under Barack Obama won’t solve the problem.  Trade with China is killing American workers.  And the Obama/Clinton foreign policy has worsened, rather than reduced, our terrorism risk, and the attacks in San Bernardino and Orlando show that we need to be more cautious about who we let into the country, rather than bringing in refugees in greater numbers and more quickly than before.

You can save us.

But the media won’t let you.  Every little thing you say, they misconstrue, and talk about endlessly as a sign of, supposedly, your racism, your misogyny, your mistreatment of others, your lack of understanding of the world.  But what Clinton says, the lies she tells, her corruption and incompetence, and that of the Obama administration, they ignore — or find ways to pin on you.  Look at the DNC e-mails revealing that the supposedly-neutral party actively schemed to support Hillary — instead of reporting on these, they claimed instead that Putin had orchestrated their release to support you because you would betray us to the Russians.  And when it was revealed that Obama secretly sent $400 million in cash to Iran as hostage ransom, the media was more interested in your off-the-cuff remarks about a baby.

And the Republican establishment won’t let you.  Sure, they’ve made the endorsements they need to make, but in their heart, they still hate the outcome and don’t really care whether you win the race.  They still can’t accept that you are the choice of the people, and the only one who cares about the American people.  All the others just wanted the presidency for their own political gain, and to make millions afterwards like the Clintons did, and can’t accept that you’re doing this for a more noble cause.

But everyone is aligned to stop you.  The media is determined to do everything in their power to prevent you from reaching the American people with your message, and they are determined to make you and your supporters look bad.  The Establishment cares more about staying in power than doing right by the American people.  And you reach so many supporters through Facebook and Twitter, but each of these is controlled by men who are likewise out to get you.  Twitter deactivated Milo Yiannopoulos’s account.  They could delete yours and it’d be perfectly legal.

Which means that — you can read the polls just as well as the rest of us, and probably have your own polling — you’re headed for a loss, and a loss that’ll be written in the history books as devastating, as proof that Trump was the most incompetent and undeserving nominee we’ve seen since the 19th century.

What can you do?  In the same way as you’ve used the bankruptcy code strategically, you need to be strategic here, too.  Engineer a switch, say, by moving Mike Pence to the top of the ticket.  Announce this at a rally, and take the media and the Republican Establishment by surprise — they’d probably prefer Paul Ryan if you simply stepped down, but you can control this if you make the announcement first.  Use your rallies to support Pence.  Get out the message that Pence will work to implement your agenda, but you’re doing this because you, Donald Trump, understand that the cause is greater than any one man, and that your goal is to help the American people, not, like Hillary Clinton, singlemindedly to have the title of President.  You’ll prove to everyone what you’ve said all along, and go down in the history books.

(* Is Trump going to read this?  What, do you think I’m delusional?  Would such words, even if spoken by a supporter, change his mind?  Look, at this point, the situation is dreadful.  What else is there to do?)
