My Wish List recommendation

So every year Megan McArdle tells us the best in kitchen gadgetry, and instapundit.com features items at Amazon which he thinks his readers might like, and Ann Althouse just reminds us that if we use her Amazon portal we support her blogging which entertains us so well.

I’m not going to do that. But I am going to tell you this: if you don’t already have one, but yourself a jump-starter for your car. I bought mine at Aldi for $20 (originally $40, which is I think the usual price, but it was on clearance), and have used it twice, the second time this morning, when my husband returned from a week-long business trip and tried to start his car, and discovered that the battery was drained due to leaving the GPS plugged in. Totally drained. Wouldn’t turn over. The lights wouldn’t turn on. And the charger didn’t work on the first try, or even the second or third. My husband came inside, had breakfast, and tried again — and then the car started up.

Not a romantic gift but very worth the money — especially since I don’t know what happened to the jumper cables we used to own (back in the day, when I drove old rustbuckets and drained the battery all to often, I was quite confident in jump starting the cable). Certainly an easier process than waiting for the tow truck to come, to do exactly the same thing but charge $65 for it (or require a AAA membership).
