Feeling Welcomed

“He who receives you receives Me, and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me. He who receives a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet’s reward. And he who receives a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man’s reward. And whoever gives one of these little ones only a cup of cold water in the name of a disciple, assuredly, I say to you, he shall by no means lose his reward.”
(Matthew 10:40-42 NKJV)

Have you ever come to someone’s house and been invited in? What did the person who owned the house do for you when you entered their home? They took off your coat, sat you in their living room, and probably offered you something to drink. This is what it means to feel welcomed.

Now Jesus did warn that there would be people who would not welcome you as a Christian. He said earlier in the chapter that there will be times in which you as a Christian will be persecuted. These are the people who will “lose his reward.” If however, a person welcomes a Christian and welcomes their message and what they represent, then they will receive a reward. If someone welcomes a Christian with a cup of cold water on a cold day, they will be rewarded with the kindness and love of God in Jesus Christ.

As a Christian, there will be people who will make you feel welcome. When they do, feel free to share your message. These are people who will recognize the value of your faith. On the other hand, there will be people who will not make you feel welcomed. They will be apprehensive, or even hostile to your presentation of Jesus Christ. If you are not welcomed, then don’t worry. They “lose their reward.” They miss out on the joy of getting to know Jesus in a personal way.
