“A psalm of thanksgiving. Shout triumphantly to the Lord, all the earth. Serve the Lord with gladness; come before Him with joyful songs. Acknowledge that Yahweh is God. He made us, and we are His — His people, the sheep of His pasture. Enter His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise. Give thanks to Him and praise His name. For Yahweh is good, and His love is eternal; His faithfulness endures through all generations.” (Psalm 100, HCSB)
We live in a country that has made thanksgiving a political propaganda tool. We talk about our history with the Indians and the Pilgrims. We acknowledge the friendship during the “First Thanksgiving.” However, in reality, we have made thanksgiving into a time of stomach-suffering, tv-watching, family-visiting, ritual. It really is not a holiday, or holy day.
We don’t acknowledge God during Thanksgiving. We have secularized something that should be a time of holiness, a time of worship, a time of prayer. We need to acknowledge Him. We need a new way to give thanks. How do we give thanks to God even when the way we celebrate Thanksgiving ignores God? I don’t know except to take the time to worship Him during our holiday.
