Leading a Double Life

““Do you steal, murder, commit adultery, swear falsely, burn incense to Baal, and follow other gods that you have not known? Then do you come and stand before Me in this house called by My name and say, ‘We are delivered, so we can continue doing all these detestable acts’? Has this house, which is called by My name, become a den of robbers in your view? Yes, I too have seen it.” This is the Lord’s declaration.”
(Jeremiah 7:9–11, HCSB)

God hates it when a Christian lives a double life. It is the ultimate form of hypocrisy. In our relationships, people don’t do well when they live a double life. Just like a spy who hides his life of espionage away from his home, it takes an enormous amount of energy to hide the sin we do in our lives. The problem we run into as Christians are that we think that we can continue to live a life of sin during the week, and then come on Sunday to worship and expect God to deliver me from the sin for the week. After our time with God on Sunday, we go back to the life which is antithetic to the purposes of God. Leading a double life like this only leads to problems later. Eventually, a person who leads a double life will get singled out for their sin.

God never expects to live a life of disobedience only to come and get forgiveness each week. The weekly time of worship is designed to refresh a Christian to be able to persevere during the week. Leading a double life is inconsistent with following Christ. Christ expects us to be consistent in our life with Him. The more our life is inconsistent with Him, the harder it will be to obey Him when He commands it.
