Miley Cyrus, MTV, and Moral Authority
August 28, 2013
“Oh sinful nation, people weighed down with iniquity, brood of evildoers, depraved children! They have abandoned the Lord; they have despised the Holy One of Israel; they have turned their backs on Him.” (Isaiah 1:4, HCSB)
The Disney Darling has outdone herself this time. Instead of the usual self-absorbed diva that she has been in her own self-titled television series, Miley Cyrus has now revealed her need for attention on stage at the MTV Video Music Awards. She even ripped off hairstyle fashion from Jim Carrey.
The fact that she is a Christian, (a Southern Baptist no less), brings out the problem of model behavior that we expect out of our role models. Even though she has stated that she is a Christian (you can find the interview on Parade Magazine here), that does not stop her from the pressures that she must overcome to connect with her audience as she changes from a child star to an adult pop icon. She is the not the first to have this problem. (Britney Spears, and Christina Aguilera comes to mind).
The problem is that MTV (or even Disney for that matter) is not the best environment to grow moral behavior. Only the Holy One (God) can teach us moral behavior.
