Making Lame Excuses
Making Lame Excuses is a simple thought reflection from Exodus 32:24 on making lame excuses to God. As Christians, we use a variety of excuses to God.
“So I said to them, ‘Whoever has gold, take it off,’ and they gave it to me. When I threw it into the fire, out came this calf!”” (Exodus 32:24, HCSB)
This is probably the lamest excuse I have read in the Bible. Aaron, the head priest, should be leading the people of God to worship God. Instead, he gives in to the people’s demands and crafts an idol for them (the earlier part of the chapter told us how he made the idol.) However, when God brings someone to call him on his sin, he pulls out this really lame excuse. It sounds like something one of my children would say to me.
This excuse just reminds us that when we sin, instead of owning our mistakes, it is easier just to make up an excuse. The excuse doesn’t prevent the consequences in this case (as a matter of fact, it makes it worse). The excuse reveals what people will do to avoid taking responsibility.
That’s why it is better to confess our sins, instead of making up lame excuses.
