Jesus Did Something Great Once

Jesus Did Something Great Once December 18, 2015

December 18, 2015 Year C

Some things are great when they are done only once. Taking tests are great when you can pass them once and not have to redo them. Jesus had the opportunity to pay for people’s sin debts. He passed the test and paid the sin debt once (Hebrews 10:10).

In the Old Testament, priests had to make sacrifices all the time because sinned all the time (Hebrews 10:11). The payment was life for life. So priests had to sacrifice animals often to pay for sin debts that happened and would happen. There was even a sacrifice one priest made for everyone for the next year, done on the “Day of Atonement” (Leviticus 16:30). However, the real “Day of Atonement” was the day Jesus died on the cross (Hebrews 10:12).

Because Jesus died once, people who choose to accept that sacrifice for themselves (and the One Who made that sacrifice) are perfected immediately before God (Hebrews 10:14).

The sacrifice of Jesus also changes the agreement between God and Man. The Holy Spirit told us this through the Scriptures (Hebrews 10:15). First, God puts is laws in your heart and mind, and not on paper or stone Hebrews 10:16). Second, God will choose to forgive sin and forget it (Hebrews 10:17). The forgiveness is what made the sacrifice a one-time thing. Because God forgave ALL sin (past, present, and future) with the death of His Son Jesus, this made the sacrifice not just enough, but great (Hebrews 10:18).

Prayer: Thank You God for forgiveness through the great sacrifice that You committed once for everyone and all time.
