Summoning the crowd, He told them, “Listen and understand: It’s not what goes into the mouth that defiles a man, but what comes out of the mouth, this defiles a man.”” (Matthew 15:10–11, HCSB)

It’s the beginning of the new year. As such, you will see many commercials for programs designed to help a person lose weight. Nutrisystem and Weight Watchers  spend money showing us commercials about their programs and how effective they were in helping a person lose weight.

Jesus has just called the Pharisees on their hypocrisy. He tells people who although they speak a good game, but their hearts are far from God.

Then Jesus says something to the crowd: What comes out of a man defiles him, not what goes in. Food doesn’t cause us to sin and make us unworthy. What comes from the heart can defile me, can make me unclean.

Cleanliness is not a food problem, but a heart problem. What makes me unclean is not what I eat. My heart makes me unclean.

If I want to truly change my life, it doesn’t take a special meal plan. It takes a change of my heart.
