Serpentine Logic

Now the serpent was the most cunning of all the wild animals that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You can’t eat from any tree in the garden’?” (Genesis 3:1, HCSB)

Many people think that Satan comes in a red suit with a pitchfork. Unfortunately, the devil is much smarter and better disguised. In this passage, Satan spoke through a serpent. Others have elaborated more on this point, so I won’t repeat that here. However, the passage shows that the serpent puts doubt in the mind of the woman.

Satan is a doubter. He is the Father of Lies. All he knows to do is to speak lies out of his mouth. His lies place doubt about the Truth of God in the mind of His children. Satan does not care what the consequences of lies do to you. All he cares about is depriving God of His glory. Satan is not as powerful as God, but he doesn’t have to be. Satan only has to make God’s children doubt God’s abilities. If Satan can get doubt in the mind of a believer, then the logic of doubt takes over. Once doubt continues, then it ends in denial.

What does that have to do with Halloween? Halloween is a fake holiday. It does not truly celebrate the glory of God. Instead, it celebrates doubting God. Children are asked to wear masks and costumes. People are invited to enjoy being scared. Horror is glorified instead of joy. Although there may have been Christian beliefs associated with the day in the past, the present secularized version is empty of any significant holy value.

The serpentine logic is fulfilled when we accept this version of Halloween. Christians buy into this lying logic when we accept the belief that Halloween is meant to be worldly and not a time to be a witness.
