“But from the beginning of creation God made them male and female.” (Mark 10:6, HCSB)
I wrote about this topic previously (you can go here to read it), but recent events have prompted me to write again:
The Boy Scouts of America have released a statement that outlines their policy concerning homosexuals. Essentially, they will accept boys, even if they claim to be gay. However, adult males can’t claim to be gay in order to work with these boys. This line of reasoning will have a complicating effect on both the boys who participate and the men who lead the organization. In an attempt to satisfy different groups, the BSA has lost their consistent focus. They are saying that you can claim to be a homosexual when you are kid, but the minute you turn eighteen, you can’t do that anymore. You get kicked out. In the end, I suspect that the Boy Scouts will have different types of troops based on their sponsoring organizations. These types will probably camp in separate camps, participate in separate activities, and form their own divisions. This schism destroys the unity of the BSA.
In the coming days, the Supreme Court will make a ruling about same-sex marriage. The Southern Baptist Convention will vote on a resolution at this week’s annual meeting in Houston, Texas whether to support the BSA policy. (I suspect the Baptists will stop supporting the Boy Scouts and form their own organization.) Other groups will stop their support of this organization. At the same time, some groups which promote same-sex marriage will probably step up their support.
The problem here is that the Boy Scouts will end up violating its core principles. Either the BSA believes in being straight – no pun intended (which includes supporting traditional marriage), or it doesn’t. Morally, they have to make a choice. They can’t satisfy everybody by compromising.
