From D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones’ Spiritual Depression: Have you realized that most of your unhappiness in life is due to the fact that you are listening to yourself instead of talking to yourself? Take those thoughts that come to you the moment you wake up in the morning. You have not originated them but they are talking to you, they bring back the problems of yesterday, etc. Somebody is talking. Who is talking to you? Your self is talking to you. Now... Read more

The last episode of I Love Lucy aired 55 years ago. But the classic sitcom is still a cash cow for CBS: The show brings in around $20 million to the studio annually, according to CBS Chief Executive Leslie Moonves, speaking at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia Conference in New York Thursday. “I Love Lucy” aired from 1951-57, and featured Ball and Arnaz as Lucy and Ricky Ricardo; the couple were married for 20 years and owned a production company, Desilu... Read more

‎”If you’re ever wondering, ‘If I have thinner thighs and shinier hair will I be happier?’ you just need to meet a group of models because they have the thinnest thighs and the shiniest hair and the coolest clothes and they are the most physically insecure women on the planet.” So says Victoria’s Secret model Cameron Russell in her heartbreakingly honest talk about the superficiality—and the importance—of physical appearance in our society. Shallow, ignorant men are certainly part of the... Read more

Bill O’Reilly doesn’t understand Christianity. Two weeks ago, O’Reilly said, “It is a fact that Christianity is not a religion. It is a philosophy.” Now he’s questioning why so many Christian leaders have stayed silent about the “war on Christmas.” The reason, Mr. O’Reilly, is because it’s not that important. Years of being away from home during the Christmas season have taught me to appreciate the continuity of traditions that are shared across America. I’ve learned to appreciate Christmas lights... Read more

In response to his own question, “What is America?”, G.K. Chesterton replied, “a nation with the soul of a church.” Throughout the nation’s history millions of believers of various faiths have shaped that soul. But which religious figures have had the most influence? I’ve selected fifty native-born Americans who, for better or worse, have had a significant influence on our nation’s religious conscience. Such a list could never be definitive, of course, but this one is likely to be particularly... Read more

Commenting on the news that Kate Middleton is pregnant, Denny Burk wonders Why aren’t we calling it the “royal fetus”? In 2004, I considered what a conversation would sound like if pro-choicers used language that was consistent with their beliefs. Overheard at a local shopping mall: Jan: “Marsha! How are you girl? I haven’t seen you in ages.” Marsha: “Hey Jan, you’re looking great. How’ve you been?” Jan: “Just peachy. Hey, guess what? I’m going to have a fetus!” Marsha... Read more

Timothy Dalrymple recently wrote a provocative post listing “Ten Things I Believe About Evangelicals and Same-Sex Marriage.” I agree almost completely with each of the ten items, as would, I suspect, most evangelicals. Within this context Tim asks: (P1) Should we hold fast to our convictions, profess those convictions publicly, and organize legally and politically to ensure that the laws reflect our convictions – OR (P2) should we hold fast to our convictions, profess those convictions publicly, and accept a... Read more

I’m a sucker for movies, lists, and religious discussions. So when Arts & Faith started compiling lists of Top 100 Spiritually Significant Films in 2004, my interest was naturally piqued. (They’ve put the list out a few other times but this seems to be the best version.) After seeing the list, though, I was left with a vague sense of disappointment. While there are many worthy inclusions, overall the list feels rather sparse and banal. Maybe that is an inevitable result of the list... Read more

There have been some great television shows that have explored the theme of war and combat (M*A*S*H, Battlestar Galactica, F-Troop). But I have to agree with the brilliant TV critic Scott that the seemingly endless series that runs on The History Channel isn’t one of them: [T]here are some shows that go completely beyond the pale of enjoyability, until they become nothing more than overwritten collections of tropes impossible to watch without groaning. I think the worst offender here is the History Channel... Read more
