Poem: “Eucharist”

Poem: “Eucharist” November 15, 2018

Symbols of religious communion.
“For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body, which is broken for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.” — 1 Corinthians 11:23-26

Poem: “Eucharist”

We come around a table lean-to.

Some people with smiles and yet
others with sullen brows.
We’re surrounded by family and
friends, our community. Words are
spoken; reminders of deeds done and
actions yet fulfilled. A thanksgiving
shared from the body:
a piece of bread and a cup of the vine,
a broken body and poured out blood.
Agreement to a shared new bond between
creator and creation. A celebration
of all things being made new and
of life and joy. With a simple confession
comes an absolution and a peace to
establish harmony. Something divine,
a fourfold remembrance:
taking    blessing    breaking    sharing.
The giving of thanks and loves acceptance:
a piece of bread and a cup of the vine,
a broken body and poured out blood.
