SAYING 88
Jesus said: The angels and the prophets will come to you, and they will give you what is yours. You also, give them what is in your hands, and say to yourselves: On what day will they come to take what is theirs?
As human beings, we are conditioned to believe that we need someone or something outside of ourselves to make us better, smarter or happier. This idea is reinforced by our parents, our teachers, our pastors, and our spiritual gurus. We almost always assume that whatever we lack must be over there, or in that, or hidden like a secret or buried like a treasure we must search for and uncover.
If we accept that paradigm, then we will always be buying the new book, attending the next conference, watching the latest YouTube video, and searching for the new experience, or relationship, or insight that will finally make us happy, or complete, or whole.
But the reality is that our Oneness with the Divine is already secure. This means the truth, the wisdom, the insight, the answers we are searching for out there are already right here within us.
The more we search for truth and wisdom as an external reality, the farther away we are to finding it. Because as long as you accept the lie that the truth you seek is an external thing to be discovered, you’ll never stop to look within where the answer is already waiting for you.
In this saying, Jesus is alluding to this same idea. He begins by focusing our attention on angels and prophets. These are ultra-spiritual beings who possess wisdom and truth on a level we mere mortals can scarcely conceive of.
Or, so we believe if we accept this idea that truth is an external thing we must receive from somewhere, or someone, else. In that condition, we must sit and wait for these spiritual beings to come to us and give us what we lack.
But notice in this saying that Jesus doesn’t say that these elite spiritual beings will come to us and give us what is theirs. No, instead he says that these spiritual envoys will arrive and give us what is ours.
In other words, they only give us what we already have because truth is not external to us, it is an internal reality we share with everyone.
Next, Jesus says that we will give to them what is in our hands. Imagine that: we have something of value to give to angels and to prophets! What do we give them? We give them what is ours. What did they come and give to us? They gave us what was already ours. And we give it right back to them.
Angels and prophets and you and I all share the same wisdom; the same truth. Why? Because there is only one truth to share; the same truth we all embody and are surrounded with at all times.
In the end, we say to ourselves, “On what day will they come and take what is theirs?” Because we have forgotten that what we have is theirs and what they have is ours. There is no “ours” or “theirs” because there is no “us” and “them.” There is only “us.”
And in our blindness, we fail to see that the angels and the prophets don’t have anything special in themselves that is their own, or that is different than what we have within ourselves.
All truth is the same truth. All wisdom is the same wisdom. All sources are the same source.
Once we can truly see clearly what reality is actually like, we will understand that what the angels and prophets bring to us is the truth we already have, and the truth we hold within is the truth we share with everyone.
