The Alito Tapes and White Christian Nationalism

The Alito Tapes and White Christian Nationalism June 13, 2024

You’ve probably heard the tape where Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito was recorded saying that this nation needs to return to “Godliness” after explaining that the fundamental differences between the Left and the Right “can’t be compromised” to end the current political polarization America is suffering from today.

While these statements and the resent controversy over Alito’s flying of two different White Nationalist flags over his various homes has created some serious concerns about his impartiality, it shouldn’t come as much surprise to anyone who looks at his record as a Supreme Court Justice.

For example, “an empirical analysis of the Court’s ‘standing’ decisions…found that Alito rules in favor of conservative litigants 100% of the time and against liberal litigants in every single case.” So, it should come as no shock that he is incapable of approaching legal matters apart from his conservative bias.

But, all of that aside, I do wish we could have a serious conversation with conservative Evangelicals about what they mean when they talk about a need for “godliness” and “Christian values” in this nation, because this seems to be the real problem.

Whenever White Christian Nationalists talk about America being a “Christian Nation” they throw around the term without defining what they mean exactly. But, one thing I do know is what they do not mean: They do not mean “Christ-like” when they say “Christian.”

They are not arguing for a nation that is more kind to the immigrant and the refugee [as Jesus specifically commanded].

They are not calling for a nation that cares about poverty, or systemic injustice, or racism [things that Jesus call his followers to care about].

They are not saying they want a nation that honors women the way Jesus did – and in fact the way Paul did when he name-dropped almost a dozen women in the early Christian church who served as deacons, and prophets, and apostles.

No, they don’t mean any of that, sadly.

What they mean is that they want America to impose a form of Christian Theocracy where – as one White Christian Nationalist pastor recently phrased it – people are ruled by a Christian leader who “comes in with a sword” and forces everyone to, at the very least, “pretend to be Christian.”

White Christian Nationalists seem to have a form of Christianity that looks and sounds nothing like Jesus would even recognize.

These White Christian Nationalists have written a 1,000+ page manifesto called “Project 2025” which plans to give the next Conservative Republican President extreme executive powers to dismantle the Federal Government, end the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Education, impose a form of martial law where appointed Christian Magistrates have legal powers to arrest and jail anyone who disagrees with their theological views, and outlaw abortion, no-fault divorce laws, and birth control, in addition to ending gay marriage and access to IVF services.

These are the sort of “Christians” who want to take away a woman’s right to choose, and her right to vote. They want everyone to follow the Bible at the risk of being jailed and/or put to death for breaking the 10 Commandments.

This is not the plot of a new science fiction television show on Netflix. This is real. And it’s the end of Democracy as we know it. It’s the end of the Constitution. It’s the end of freedom of religion, freedom of speech and freedom of thought.

In other words, we need to take this very, very seriously.

Because these White Christian Nationalists are sitting on the Supreme Court. They are serving as the Speaker of the House. They are state officials, including Governors and elected state representatives. They have the support of over 100 Christian non-profit organizations and they are very well-funded and organized and determined to impose their Project 2025 agenda on every single American, whether we like it or not.

I’m not trying to scare you. This is not intended to spread fear. But it is intended to inform you about the very real threat to democracy we are currently facing.

Growing up as an Evangelical Christian, I was always told that it was the “Godless Liberal Democrats” who were planning to shred the Constitution and take away our God-Given rights as Americans. But apparently the real threat isn’t “Godless Liberals”, it’s “Christian Conservatives.”

Do whatever you can to educate yourself about Project 2025 by reading their free PDF book available HERE>

If reading even a little of that doesn’t disturb you, I don’t know what would.

But, if we’re talking about America becoming a “Godly” country, I should hope that love is the primary focus, because God is love, and love is not about control.

Let us pray.
