Practical Steps for Compassion in Action
If you’ve been paying attention to the news, you’ve probably felt the same mixture of heartbreak and helplessness that so many of us have when it comes to the situation in Palestine. The stories of families torn apart, homes destroyed, and lives uprooted are overwhelming. And the question always looms: What can we do? Is there anything practical, meaningful, or impactful that we can contribute?
Here’s the good news: there are ways to help. And it doesn’t always require a massive budget or a nonprofit organization. It just requires heart, commitment, and the courage to start.
In this post, let me share some actionable ways to make a difference for those in Palestine—whether you’re giving, organizing, or simply speaking up.
- Direct Aid: Supporting Families on the Ground
One of the most effective ways to help is through direct aid. My friend Jeff, who has been a peacemaker for years, is a perfect example of this. He started with one family in Gaza and, through sheer determination and grassroots support, raised over $30,000 to assist multiple families. How? By building relationships and using tools like PayPal to send funds directly to those who need it most.
If you’re looking to follow this model, begin by connecting with trustworthy organizations or individuals already working on the ground. These families often have immediate needs for food, shelter, and medical care. Even small contributions can have a significant impact.
- Collaborate with Grassroots Organizations
Grassroots efforts often yield high impact because they’re community-driven. For example, initiatives like Love Bridges unite Christians and Muslims to fund projects such as orphanages in Uganda and feeding programs in Sudan. These models inspire collaboration and compassion.
You might want to research organizations like Impact Nations or local groups that provide food, shelter, and educational resources to displaced families. Reach out to see how you can contribute or amplify their work.
- Advocate and Spread Awareness
If you feel like you can’t give much financially, never underestimate the power of your voice. Social media platforms like Instagram and BlueSky are invaluable for spreading awareness. Share posts, amplify voices from Gaza, and provide information that counters misinformation or media bias. However, be aware that some platforms may suppress posts on sensitive topics, so find creative ways to ensure your message is heard.
Also, consider engaging with your local representatives. Let them know where you stand on policies that affect Palestinians. Advocacy can happen in your own backyard.
- Support Ethical Businesses
Consider buying products from Palestinian artisans and businesses. Many refugees sustain themselves by creating beautiful handmade items such as scarves, bags, and embroidered clothing. Purchasing these goods directly supports their livelihoods while also preserving Palestinian culture and heritage.
- Educate Yourself and Others
Knowledge is power. Learn about the historical and ongoing struggles of Palestinians. Books, documentaries, and conversations with people involved in peace-building efforts can deepen your understanding and help you speak confidently about the issue.
My go-to recommendation is the documentary WITH GOD ON OUR SIDE which explains the conflict by speaking to people on both sides of the conflict and humanizing everyone involved.
One of the things I’ve come to realize is how interconnected we all are. When we understand that every person’s pain is a reflection of our own, it becomes easier to act with compassion and urgency.
- Organize Fundraisers
If you’re someone who loves organizing events or creating community initiatives, why not channel that energy into a fundraiser? My friend Phil in the UK is planning a walk to “Palestine,” a local town 93 miles from his home, to raise funds and awareness for families in Gaza. Creativity and effort go a long way.
- Challenge Systems of Injustice
Finally, don’t be afraid to tackle the systemic issues that perpetuate suffering. This could mean calling out bias in media coverage or supporting legislation that advocates for Palestinian rights. Justice is about more than just charity—it’s about dismantling the systems that cause harm in the first place.
Closing Thoughts
Helping Palestine isn’t about solving everything all at once. It’s about small, meaningful acts of kindness and resistance. Whether you’re giving $10, sharing a post, or raising awareness in your community, every action adds to a ripple of change.
We are the second coming. It’s up to us to be the hands and feet of compassion, to see the humanity in each other, and to act with love and courage. Because when we do, we’re not just helping others—we’re healing the world.
