If you’ve spent any time online in the last decade, you’ve probably noticed something
strange happening in American Christianity. Somewhere along the way, a significant
number of so-called “Jesus followers” started treating a New York real-estate mogul and
Billionaire as if he were the thirteenth apostle.
Suddenly, the Sermon on the Mount was optional, the fruit of the Spirit was negotiable,
and the Beatitudes were entirely forgotten.
And now, believe it or not, someone decided to publish a book comparing the sayings of
Trump to the wisdom of Jesus. As if these two people were somehow on the same
page, or on the same team?
Give me a break.
Now, if you know Quoir Publishing, you know we’re not shy about questioning religious
power structures. In fact, our entire brand is pretty much built on challenging the status
quo of modern Evangelical Christianity. So, when we realized that someone was –
unironically – publishing a book that suggested Jesus and Trump were sympatico, we
had to respond.
That’s why this book exists: To provide an actual comparison and contrast between the
words of Jesus and the words of Donald J. Trump.
Turns out, when you don’t cherry-pick Trump’s quotes or take care to eliminate all the
misogynistic, racist, narcissistic things he’s said over the years, he and Jesus don’t
sound anything alike.
Furthermore, when you actually quote everything Jesus said about caring for the poor,
loving your enemy, showing compassion to the outcast, honoring women, and humbling
yourself to serve others, the stark contrast to someone like Donald Trump becomes
unmistakably apparent.
Honestly, I’m also not interested in telling anyone what to think. But I am deeply
committed to helping people rediscover the radical, upside-down, ego-shattering
teachings of Jesus, who blesses the poor, centers the marginalized, refuses violence,
and calls us into a Kingdom that looks nothing like Empire.
So this book began with a simple question:
What if we placed the words of Donald Trump and the words of Jesus side-by-side and
simply paid attention?
Not to shame anyone. Not to score political points. Not to perpetuate the culture wars,
but simply to hold up a mirror.
Because when two voices speak from two fundamentally different kingdoms, something
illuminating happens. The contrast becomes so sharp, so undeniable, that it almost
feels unfair…like comparing a white Billionaire President of an American Empire to a
poor, humble Jewish Rabbi from the Middle East.
This book isn’t about policy. It isn’t about a political party. It isn’t even about Trump,
really. It’s about sanity. Because only someone who has lost their grip on reality could
ever seriously consider comparing Trump to Jesus Christ.
Ultimately, this book is about choosing which voice shapes our imagination, our
spirituality, and our daily lives. Whether we realize it or not, we have to decide whether
we want to be formed into the image of Christ or into the image of a selfish, prideful,
man-child who can never admit he’s wrong.
My hope is that as you read this, you’ll let the obvious contrast between Jesus and
Trump do its work. Maybe you’ll even hear the words of Jesus again with fresh ears and
realize that he wasn’t an American, and he isn’t anyone’s political mascot.
Most of all, I hope that you can see that, when you put Trump’s words and Jesus’s
words side-by-side, the light exposes the darkness.
