In news that should shock no one the head of the Duck Dynasty clan, Phil Robertson, has endorsed noted homophobic ex-judge Roy Moore for the open senate seat in Alabama. This comes on the heels of an endorsement of Moore by Chuck Norris. I imagine Kid Rock and Ted Nugent are just waiting in the wings to throw their support behind Ol’ Roy.
“I have been an admirer for some time of Judge Roy Moore,” Robertson said in a statement. “He judged with a good understanding of the Constitution and the law, but he also understands natural law and who gave us our rights to begin with, Almighty God. Roy Moore will stand up for truth and what’s right, no matter who opposes him, and that is sorely needed in Washington DC. I fully endorse his run for the Senate and pray for he and his family.”
It shouldn’t surprise anyone that a Christian fundamentalist like Robertson would support a person like Roy Moore. Both spoke out against the Supreme Court ruling that legalized gay marriage in all fifty states and both believe in the false narrative that Christianity is under attack in the United States. Both have been suspended from their jobs over their hateful stances and those actions just reinforced the persecution narrative for many fundamentalist Christians to those who support them.
In 2013 Robertson was suspended from his TV show Duck Dynasty for his comments related to homosexuals.
“Sin becomes fine. Start with homosexual behavior and just morph out from there,” he told GQ. “Bestiality, sleeping around with this woman and that woman and that woman and those men.”
Like Robertson, Roy Moore is outspoken in his beliefs and uses his religion to express anti-LGBT views while expressing the belief Christians are truly persecuted in the United States.
“Welcome to the new world. It’s just changed for you Christians. You are going to be persecuted according to the U.S Supreme Court dissents,” Moore said.
I’ve expressed my thoughts on Roy Moore many times and I think those who buy into this persecution narrative will certainly turn out to vote for him. Phil Robertson is definitely one with that mindset.
