My First Communion

My First Communion May 7, 2013

Ever since celebrating First Communion at my parish last Saturday, I’ve been remembering my own First Communion.  It happened on April 20th, 1991, at Santa Maria Reina Parish in San Isidro (Lima), just six days before leaving Peru.  My parents had already decided we would leave Peru, but chose to stay till after my first communion so I could receive it with my friends from school.

On the last page of a book with my first communion pictures and memories I wrote under a heading which reads “My Goals as of Today”:  I will do good things, I will be good and I will receive communion every Sunday.  I hadn’t read these goals ever since the day I wrote them.  As a priest I am certain to be on track to be faithful to all three!

I am beyond thankful for God’s wisdom and strength which I’ve received throughout my life through the Eucharist.  He has manifested himself powerfully and guided me.

Jesus tells us in the Gospel of Saint John: “Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you.  Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day.  For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink.  Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him.”
