As one drives or walks in a city, there are so many things to read. Advertisements, billboards, road signs, warnings, inscriptions, posters, historical markers, graffiti etc. Most of these do not evoke a deep emotional response, they simply want us to purchase an item, vote for a candidate or stay out of a construction zone. I read the inscription above in 2006 while walking down a busy road in Jerusalem while participating in the Stations of the Cross. Not only... Read more

When Elena Kagan was sworn in as a justice of the Supreme Court on August 7th, 2010, a truly historic moment happened.  For the first time in history there were no Protestants in the highest court of the land.  Three Jews and six Catholics became the highest ranking judges in the country.  After the sudden death of Justice Antonin Scalia last month, President Obama has nominated Merrick Garland to be his successor.  As soon as I heard the name, I... Read more

Read more

I recently attended a unique play at the Savannah College of Art and Design that not only told the story of the gruesome execution of five Amish school girls in 2006, but was written to evoke a strong response from the audience towards the event it recounted.  Mostly a monologue, the characters confronted the audience with a sharply contrasting response to the murder: the Amish forgave the murderer while others expressed anger towards his family.  The drama unfolded before us,... Read more

Every year, on March 17th, the city of Savannah hosts the second largest Saint Patrick Day Parade in the United States.  Only New York City can boast that its parade is bigger than Savannah’s. Savannah has been celebrating its Irish heritage for several days already.  The Celtic Cross Mass was held last Sunday at the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist where several Irish-American societies were represented at the very solemn celebration.  Afterwards, everyone paraded to Emmet Park, the area... Read more

The Spanish weekly bulletin Alfa & Omega reports that due to increased human and affective immaturity of candidates who desire to study for the priesthood, Rome is considering increasing the minimum age required for ordination. Currently the age is 25, but a minimum age of 27 is being considered. Alfa & Omega also states that if the age is not increased, seminaries will be required to insert an introductory course prior to a man being definitively accepted into the seminary.... Read more

Read more

Every human person experiences reality through his or her senses.  Each bundle of experiences is unique, cannot be duplicated, nor can it be shared.  Even when an experience is lived along with another, each individual’s perception of the experience is unique. When we encounter a person, we never know where the person has been.  We ignore the struggles, victories, joys and failures that influence the person’s viewpoints and choices.  We will never know the whole story.  While in high school,... Read more

Read more

The Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist in Savannah welcomed well over 1,200 faithful from all corners of the diocese for an official Year of Mercy Pilgrimage.  Responding to the call of Pope Francis to go on pilgrimage during this Jubilee Year, Bishop Hartmayer invited all the faithful of the diocese to an afternoon of prayer and mercy at the diocesan mother church. Pilgrims had an opportunity to enter the cathedral through the Holy Door which was beautifully decorated.  Some arrived... Read more
