Crises are an inevitable part of life. Sometimes they are related to employment. Sometimes they are related to health. Sometimes they are related to the health of a loved one. However they emerge, crises require focused attention and the ability to remain objective in order for us to survive them. Focused attention and objectivity are hard to maintain over the long-haul without a long-term strategy. Here are some steps you can take that will get you through even some of the most difficult long term crises.
Never try to survive a crisis alone. Make time to be with people who make you laugh. Unfortunately, those of us who are more introverted tend to hunker down during a crisis. We do not talk about our problems and prefer the solace that comes with solitude. That is the exact wrong thing to do. Being with others, particularly our longstanding friends, gives us the strength to face our crises. One does not have to constantly talk about our problems with our friends. In fact, that is counterproductive. The best thing to do is just be with them. Talk about the things you always do. If you have the need to bend their ear on occasion it is ok. Just let their friendship remind you that there are things outside of your present crisis.
Do something good for your body. The body is taxed as much as the mind and spirit during a long term crisis. Consider the benefits of exercise. Scientists tell us that exercise produces chemicals in the brain that create positive emotions. So, make sure to take a walk, or a run, or go on a hike.
Do something you love to do. I have met some people who derive great pleasure from gardening. Now I do wonder about those who get joy out of pulling weeds out of a flower bed in the hot summer sun, but if that works for you, do it. Regularly. Whatever your hobby, make sure you do it regularly when you are in a crisis. It will make a long term difference in your life.
The most important thing you can do, though, is worship God. For many of us, when we are in crisis we do not feel like worshipping at all. Like most spiritual disciplines, when we feel the least like doing them they are the most important. Worship reminds us that the God of the universe is at work, and He is on our side.
Lastly, remember something about the promises of God. God has promised that everything that happens in this life He will turn to our good. The good may not be in the same form as what we lose, the good may not even be visible in this life, but God asks us to trust Him that He is working in every circumstance for us.
You can survive whatever crisis you face. They may seem overwhelming, but they do not have to overpower you. Lean on the power of God, and wait for God to keep His promises for you. God is faithful and will be with you.
