Today I am guest blogger at Bruce Gerencser’s The Way Forward blog. I’m writing about a subject that’s more important than Creationism or even a government agency validating a fundamentalist curriculum. It’s the fundamentalist doctrine of total depravity, and how it is used to justify horrific physical abuse. This will be the first of many posts on this subject. Here’s an excerpt of the kind of joy you will learn about: This view of the child as needing to be… Read more

This week’s Times Educational Supplement contains a new article on NARIC’s approval of the International Certificate of Christian Education. Outrage as qualifications that dispute Darwinism get green light They confidently claim that the Loch Ness monster disproves Darwinism and that there is clear proof of creationism. But that has not stopped a set of controversial Christian qualifications – used by dozens of British private schools – being described as comparable to international O and A levels. The International Certificate of Christian… Read more

Sex education with Accelerated Christian Education is… well, it’s bizarre. Biology 1107 is, to my knowledge, the only PACE which deals with human reproduction, and it manages to do so without ever once giving so much as a hint as to how reproduction might occur. The nouns “egg” and “sperm” both feature, but there is no indication as to where these mysterious entities might be found (beyond “in the female” and “in the male”), and absolutely no suggestion as to how… Read more

If you’re new here, a quick catch up on the story so far: A UK government agency has said that qualifications based on a fundamentalist curriculum are comparable to O-level and A-level standard. These qualifications teach racism, lies and more lies as fact. They use meaningless methods of assessment, and teach political propaganda. Many Christians believe the system is wrong on theological grounds. UK Naric has benchmarked the ICCE General Certificate as comparable to O-level standard. Of course, since hardly anyone takes O-levels, most readers will interpret this to mean “GCSE… Read more

Worth checking out, some excellent coverage of recent ACE-related news from around the world. Wonkette, which on the strength of this could become my new favourite site, gave a hilarious destruction of ACE’s science teaching. This makes me think I should stop being so damn academic and start being populist if I want to get my point across: “We’ve been bashing on Louisiana a lot lately — pointing out how they’re pretty much the awfulest state in the union, how their prison… Read more

In part 2 of Richard Dawkins’ 2006 documentary The Root of All Evil, Dawkins visits Phoenix Acadamy, an ACE school in London, and interviews its head teacher, Adrian Hawkes. It’s worth watching because you catch glimpses of PACEs and an ACE learning centre, as well as hearing the views of one of its exponents. In my view, Hawkes misrepresents the extent of ACE’s Creationism, presumably to avoid looking bad. Here’s the video; the segment on Phoenix/ ACE starts at 10:33 and… Read more

Following Monday’s revelations, this is another very important blog post. Again, please share this where you can; this is important news. There’s a “too long; didn’t read” bullet point list at the end for the terminally lazy or pressed-for-time. As I’ve already written, UK Naric has approved the International Certificate of Christian Education (ICCE), advanced certificate, as equivalent to A-level standard. This is surprising because, until now, every academic review of the curriculum has been extremely critical. Even Christians agree on this…. Read more

Not a full new post today. I want to make sure everyone sees Monday’s post. To satisfy your cravings for more of me, however (I know you can’t resist), here’s a guide to me-related web happenings of the last week. Accelerated Christian Education has been all over the internet the last few days, and my name’s been in most of the articles. Louisiana has instituted a voucher program in its schools which means that students can get government money to… Read more

This is the most important blog post I’ve written yet. It’s not as populist as the Top 5 posts, but please read it, comment, tweet, share on reddit and reblog. This is a crucial news story and it needs to get out there. Earlier this year, Naric, a UK government agency, recognised the International Certificate of Christian Education (ICCE) as comparable to Cambridge International A-Level standard. This is a travesty, and not just because of Creationism. ICCE is the certificate… Read more

As I expected, Jesus Jihad: Could There Be a Christian Bin Laden? has received a torrent of objections. I want to do deal with them all. After that, I don’t anticipate talking about this again. (more…) Read more
