The Dark Goddess. Who is She? What is She?

The dark goddess rules over everything we fear. She offers us wisdom in exchange for pain. The dark goddess is sometimes terrifying, her lessons often painful, but the dark goddess dwells within each of us and is a vital part of our being. She is the force that shines within us in our darkest hour and the face we turn to when we seek rebirth.

She Teaches Us

She likes nothing better than to break us apart, only to remake us anew. The dark goddess and the lessons she teaches are vital to our lives. Her destructive aspects teach us that there is death within life, that we are constantly changing and evolving. No matter what we have been through in our lives, we can rise from the ashes. The dark goddess is a no-nonsense goddess, teaching us to make our voices heard, to stand up and be counted, and inspiring us to bring about change, both within ourselves and the world around us. The dark goddess is the shadowy keeper of the dead, teaching us how to pierce the veil, to see into the future, to commune with the Beloved Dead.

She Rules Over Fear

The dark goddess rules over things we fear the most. Some fear that working with her will bring out the darkest or worst aspects of themselves. Other times we are simply afraid to welcome change into our lives and finally release the things that we keep buried deep within our souls. While working with the Dark Goddess you may face things about yourself that you would rather ignore. But her path is one of transformation and ultimately one of healing.

Dark Vs Light

What exactly does it mean when we refer to a goddess as “dark”? Humans have a tendency to want to put things as vast and unknowable as the gods into boxes, to categorize and simplify them in an attempt to understand them better. We label things in a search for understanding. In modern Paganism, we often divide deities into two camps: light and dark. The idea of a goddess being dark or light is a recent development and has no real place in ancient culture. Dividing the gods into dualistic, often opposing natures is very much in line with our modern concepts of good and evil, and stems from the influence of monotheistic religion. Today we like to think of the world in terms of everything having its opposite, instead of seeing that most things, including the gods, fall into a gray area.

What does the Dark Goddess Do?

Gods are not divine parents. This is perhaps more obvious when you work with the Dark Gods. They care about us and aspects of our lives, but they also have their own agendas and have a much vaster picture in mind. We can’t apply human expectations to them – or moralities, for that matter. They are not human after all.

When working with dark gods, we forget that they will make us face uncomfortable things. Asking for their help may land us in situations we may not like, even if overall it will lead us to be stronger or to overcome something. When we are faced with that kind of tough love, it’s not hard to see how dark gods get labeled as evil or dangerous because they don’t quite fit the loving heavenly parent image. A deity may well love us, but if they think making your world come crashing down is what’s best for you or what you have asked them for, they will have no qualms about making it part of your reality.

Dark Goddesses are beings who instigate and navigate us through change. They use destruction as a catalyst. They are liminal deities and the teachers of hard truths. Dark Goddesses rule over transformation of all kinds. When we meet Dark Goddesses there are no guarantees who we will be at the end of our journey through the dark.

Consequences of Working with the Dark Goddess

You cannot go through the process of life-changing transformation without causing any harm. But just by living and breathing we affect the rest of the world, sometimes in a good, creative way and sometimes in a destructive way. We destroy things to fuel our continued existence on a myriad of levels each day. The nature that Pagans worship is brutal and deadly at times. Lions eat zebras, and I have no problem seeing this brutal truth as being balanced and having a kind of beauty. Nothing comes for free, especially in magick. When we get caught up in the idea that we can do magick without a cost, create change without consequences, we are either left wondering why our magick didn’t work or why our world is suddenly turning into shit. Deep and powerful magick, or rather deep and powerful transformation requires work. You don’t have to offer a grand sacrifice or your firstborn child to the gods, but the things you want to bring into your life may cost you some tears and some honest soul-searching.

Changing with the Dark Goddess

Dark deities will help you through the process of change. They will give you exactly what you asked for but at the same time they expect you to earn it. They will sit there, tapping their feet, arms crossed, until you get the point. That requires a certain amount of trust in the deity. Many people who experience this will chalk it up to that Goddess being spiteful or dangerous. But they are there to help you work through your darkest fears, your biggest challenges. They are like drill sergeants preparing you for war, for the hard realities of life. They are on your side, but they won’t do the work for you.

Real change feels like death. At its core change is a process of destroying in order to move forward or re-create ourselves or part of our life. By its very nature, it demands that part of us die or be destroyed to accomplish this. It is a process no more peaceful than a construction crew taking a wrecking ball to an old building to clear the way for a new one is. When we go through the process of change, at the innermost parts of our being, it is no less violent or chaotic. Nothing in this universe can be created without destroying something in its stead. And breaking down the things that dwell at the core of our being – the things that weigh our spirits down, that can be the hardest to let go of, the hardest to destroy – is not easy, not should it be. It does not happen all at once.
