Don’t be Cruel and Irresponsible, Go Out and Vote!

Don’t be Cruel and Irresponsible, Go Out and Vote!

James 1:21-22 – “…but be doers of the word, and not hearers only…”

Many Christians and even non-Christians don’t want to get involved in politics but as Christians, we MUST get involved. We cannot stay silent.

The Proof

As proof of this I submit a series of Historical and Biblical characters that were involved in changing the political environments of their day!

Just taking a casual glance at the Old Testament alone, we have people like:

Joseph (Genesis 41:39-41) whom the Pharaoh gave political control of all Egypt.

Moses (Exodus 5:2-4) who faced Pharaoh as a messenger of God and won freedom for God’s family.

Deborah (Judges 5:1-7) a prophetess and judge who helped destroy the Lord’s enemies.

Gideon (Judges 6:11-14) who became the mighty warrior for God’s cause.

Samuel (I Samuel 3:1-19) a prophet and judge who choose Saul as Israel’s king.

David (I Samuel 16:1-13) as a boy he fought against Goliath as a man he led the nation of Israel.

Nehemiah (Nehemiah 1:1-11) stood firm for the rebuilding of the temple.

Esther (Esther 1-10) who for such a time as this saved the whole Jewish nation.

Daniel (Daniel 1:4-6; 18-21) who served the king, while obeying God.

The Most Political Person Ever

And, of course, in the New Testament, we have a man named Jesus from Nazareth, who was one of the most political characters of his day, among many others.

Let me tell you why it is important for Christians to get involved in politics. It’s because the Bible’s solutions make sense. It is Christian involvement in government through the ages that gave us hospitals, civil liberties, abolition of slavery, modern science, the elevation of women, regard for human life, great works of art and literature, a workable system of justice, education for common people, the free-enterprise system, and much, much more.

When we see the good that results from applying God’s principles, and the horror that results from rejecting them, doesn’t it seem cruel and irresponsible to keep Jesus’ teachings about truth, love and compassion to ourselves?

I hope you take on the challenge of becoming a good citizen. Go out there and cast your VOTE. In the “Gettysburg Address” Abraham Lincoln expressed hope that “government of the people, by the people, and for the people, shall not perish from the earth.” Hundreds of thousands have died to establish freedom and justice. Do not let their deaths be in vain. VOTE!
