A Pakistani man, Chaudhry Rashid, in Atlanta murdered his 25 year old daughter this weekend and had his first court appearance today. Deemed an ‘honor killing’, this story is unfortunately not unique. What always confuses me about stories on “honor killings” is that every case of domestic violence that leads to death (which happens all too often), when committed by a MUSLIM man is deemed an “honor killing”. This case seems to be similar to situations that occur SO often... Read more

A woman in Saudi Arabia defied the driving ban, but while doing so, lost control of her car and died in the accident. Another story here. Interestingly enough, both stories’ headlines have serious warning tones: “Saudi woman defies driving ban and dies” and “Young Saudi woman drives to death.” As if the cause of her death was driving instead of her car flipping over and crashing… These headlines serve only reinforce the stupid idea that women shouldn’t be driving: “SEE!... Read more

MMW thanks Dianna for the tip! This was written by Jehanzeb and was originally published at Broken Mystic. This has been edited for length; you can read the post in its entirety here. Meet “Dust,” or Sooraya Qadir, a burqa-garbed adolescent Afghan girl who has the ability, as shown in the scene above, to shape into sandstorms and tear the skin off her enemies. She has been a member of Marvel Comic’s X-Men since her first appearance in 2002 and... Read more

As salaamu ‘alaikum and hello to all! I’m Faith and I’m one of the newest members of the MMW team. I’m thrilled to be here. Like Krista, I tend to overanalyse just about everything. So this is the perfect place for me. In addition to MMW, I also write on two other blogs: The Tales of a Modern Muslimah and Muslimnista. The former I write on just about everything from race, gender, and theology to my cat. The other has... Read more

Hello and assalaamu alaikum MMW readers! My name is Krista and I’m just getting started as a MMW blogger. I’m excited to join the team of writers, especially since I tend to overanalyse all of these topics anyway. I live in Vancouver (on unceded Coast Salish territory) and finished my undergrad degree in Women’s and Gender Studies last year. I’ll be moving to Toronto this fall to start a master’s in Sociology and Equity Studies in Education. Lately, I’ve been... Read more

At first, I wanted to talk about this article because of the language of this white woman on a mission to “rescue” women in Pakistan. (This language was even reproduced in the MMW Friday links – come on sisters, we can do better than that!) Don’t we have a long enough history of images of civilised, benevolent, liberated Europeans going to save people in other parts of the world? Painting the British-Pakistani young women in the article as victims in... Read more

Ather Zia looks at Kashmiri women in politics for Arabisto. The number of foreign nationals attending religious schools in Qom, Iran, is increasing, including female enrollment. Members of Kuwaiti parliament support a petition by the country’s two female ministers to appear in Parliament without headscarves. Recent destruction of several girls’ schools by extremists in Pakistan is condemned by Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gillani. THE. STUPIDEST. “NEWS” STORY. I HAVE EVER. SEEN. IN MY LIFE. A woman and her daughter are... Read more

This is a few of months late but I just discovered this episode of The Agenda with Steve Paikin, from TVO in Toronto. Having aired a few months ago, this episode asked the question “Who is today’s young Muslim woman?” The panel consisted of 7 Muslim women, 4 in studio and 2 via satellite. All but one panelist would be considered young. The seventh was Dr. Katherine Bullock, author and professor in Toronto. Paikin began the show by pointing out... Read more

This was written by Ursula Lindsay and originally published at The Arabist. MMW thanks Forsoothsayer for the tip! I was sent this image in an email forward. The text says: “You can’t stop them, but you can protect yourself.” Two obvious (and rhetorical) questions: Can we really not stop harassment? And does veiling really “protect” you? Editor’s Note: This advertisement refers to women covering themselves up (with a headscarf, presumably) in order to combat sexual harassment. Women are not lollipops.... Read more

This was written by Tasnim and originally appeared at epiphanies. A while ago, the assistant editor of Destiny, a South African women’s magazine, emailed me asking for help in finding information on successful Libyan women online. Unsurprisingly she had found very little, since what information there is about Libyan women does not fit the criteria of ‘successful’. While women like Ibtisam Ben Amer, who recently ranked 28 on Forbes‘ list of most powerful Arab businesswomen, would by most standards be... Read more
