Rush Limbaugh and the Pope’s Pantheist

Rush Limbaugh and the Pope’s Pantheist July 1, 2015

I have a new article up at Salon discussing a recent episode of Rush Limbaugh’s radio show. The title of his episode was “The Pope’s ‘Science Advisor’ Is An Atheist Who Worships The Earth.”  Limbaugh begins:

My friends, not one to let things go, I have dug deep, and I have found out practically everything there is to know about the science advisor to Pope Francis on this encyclical. And the main thing you need to know, the guy’s an atheist.

Why is that the most important thing we should know? Shouldn’t we know about the nature and extent of his scientific expertise? Why does it matter if the guy’s an atheist? The Pope’s not. Nor is Katharine Hayhoe, a climate scientist and self-described “climate change evangelist.” Limbaugh doesn’t even mention her. In fact, she’s an Evangelical Christian.

As I mention in the article, a search for her on Limbaugh’s site turned up only one mention of her name — and he doesn’t even mention the fact that she’s an Evangelical Christian. But he does call her a “babe.”
