The Lady of the Lake

The Lady of the Lake March 1, 2019

The Lady of the Lake is most famously known as the sorceress who bestows the sword Excalibur to King Arthur. The famous image tied to her is of one hand holding the sword above the waters of Avalon. In the Arthurian legends she is known by many names, notably Nimue and Vivienne. In some versions of the legends (notably Tennyson) she is associated with Morgan la Fey. Some theorize that there were many ladies of the lake and that the legends about her are a conglomeration of the acts of these various individual women.

In her legends she becomes student to Merlin who falls in love with her and teaches her his ways of sorcery. She soon surpasses him in ability and ends up entombing him in a tree. She was also the foster mother of Lancelot and raised him in the waters of Avalon. Today she is still associated with the healing well in Glastonbury in Somerset, England. Glastonbury is thought to be the isle of Avalon.

The Lady of the Lake, by whichever name you know her, is a powerful sorceress, expert healer, great teacher, and purveyor of wisdom. She will teach those she has initiated into her ways the art of healing and transmutation via the mysteries of water. She inspires creativity and encourages her devotees to be creative as well, as she rules the imagination and the watery world of dreams.

The Lady of the Lake will help her devotees discover their inner strength and grow their psychic abilities. As an underworld goddess she assists in oceanic journeying and other forms of otherworld and underworld journeys. She may create contact with a new devotee in dreams that feature water prominently. She oversees childbirth and is the chief authority of women’s mysteries.

The Lady of the Lake’s sacred symbols are apples which are the namesake of Avalon (red for transformation, gold for immortality), the chalice, The Vesica Pisces, and other water symbols. Her sacred numbers are 3 and 7, and the stones that correspond with her are moonstone and blue apatite.

To connect with her outside of the dream world, consider water divination from a living source under light of a full moon.
