Last said that birth control, abortion and divorce have all contributed to Americans deciding to have fewer or no children.

The one bright spot, Last noted, is religious families.

“People who are having a lot of kids now are the ones who end up inheriting the earth,” he said.

    If having fewer children means that I’m able to give them more than hand to mouth living, and if having none means that no one’s raised with a parent who doesn’t love them, I don’t see the problem.

    Birth control did not cause couples to “decide” to have fewer children. It gave those who already had the desire for fewer the capability of doing so. Women could try to avoid it in the past, but it wasn’t very effective. The only thing that’s changed is the ability.

    In 17th century Japan, despite the lack of modern birth control, the birth rate dropped from 7-9 to 2-3 because of economic shifts. On a large scale, people are economically rational beings and will adjust family size based on what’s best for them.
    Until we become a feudal agrarian society, QFers will continue to be statistical outliers.
