Happy New Year! – Open Thread January 1, 2014

by Suzanne Calulu cross posted from her blog True Love Doesn’t Rape

For the last few weeks I’ve been waiting with baited breath for CBN’s Pat Robertson to make his yearly announcement claiming that God told him what to expect in the coming year. Pat’s obviously falling down on the job since he’s been largely silent on 2014. Or perhaps his handlers are realizing how insane he’s started to sound in the last few years.

Let us revisit what he said in December 2012 in regards to 2013’s happenings….

  • The country is in great peril
  • It will come a financial reckoning, debts called in, money devalued, people on fixed incomes will suffer. Creditors will seize assets to pay back debts.
  • It will be a time of great turmoil.
  • God says to get out of debt and hold all your purchasing to a bare minimum to prepare for those times.
  • God’s glory will shine everything. Many will turn to God and many will curse and revile God.
  • It will be a time of great division with the worse rebellions and turmoil ever seen before.
  • It will be a time of miracles and favor for CBN but very tough of people who don’t know God and live in the world.

Some of these are so damn vague they could take on all sorts of different meanings but the truth is that nothing that perilous or awful happened here in 2013. Is there division? Yes, but there always is. Peril and turmoil could mean anything.

Here’s what I think 2014 will be like ala Pat.

  • The economy will continue a weak march towards recovery
  • The new healthcare laws may or may not be a good thing
  • Americans will still continue to max out their credit cards but at least it will help stimulate the economy
  • Christians will keep claiming that they are discriminated against and persecuted
  • Gays, transgendered folks, abortionists and birth control will still be blamed by the religious right for all sorts of stupid things.
  • The sun will still shine, the grass stay green and the sky blue.

And I’m sure I missed a ton of things that will certainly happen. Please feel free to add your own or discuss anything in the comments. Did you make a resolution this year or are you making good changes in this new year?

I guess I watch different news than Pat because credit card debt has been going down not up.

If I know anything about CBN and Pat Robertson every hurricane, tornado, and mass power outage due to weather is specifically caused by God trying to punish the town or city via bad weather. Good god loving Christians are immune to bad storms.

Here are my predictions for 2014:
    1. Some people will lose weight, some people will gain it. Most people will promise to go to the gym all year and will only end up going during the first week of January and then they’ll give up.
    2. People will marry each other
    3. Babies will be born
    4. People will die. Many will be old, many will be young.
    5. The Kardashians will do something trashy.
    6. Fox News will continue their Blame Everything on Obama campaign
    7. There will be political scandals.
    8. The war on the reproductive rights of women will continue. Misogynist things will be said.
    9. The war marriage equality will continue, and some asshat will say something homophobic and there will be an uproar in the media. Memes about that remark will circulate Facebook and Twitter for weeks.
    10. There will be huge storms, and natural disasters all around the globe.
    11. There will be mass shootings.
    12. Some TV shows will get cancelled.
    13. The Westboro Baptist Church will picket a lot of things, and they’ll continue to be the despicable dickholes that they’ve always been.
    14. Some celebrity will die of an overdose. Other celebrities will die of other causes.

In conclusion, the same shit that’s happened in other years, will happen this year. Also, Pat Robertson is an idiot who needs to shut up and take a nap, the grouchy old bastard. The only thing we can do is hope that we each have a good year, and that none of the really bad shit happens to us.

    in 2014:

There will be earthquakes all over the world. They will mostly occur around the Ring of Fire ringing the Pacific Ocean.

There will be volcanic eruptions, again mostly around the Pacific, but also Iceland and Hawaii.

There will be hurricanes. They will mostly build in the Atlantic Ocean and hit the tropics. As climate change continues, they will increase in strength and move further north.

There will be unrest in the Middle East.

Religious belief in general will continue to decline. The believers that are left will be more devout, more passionate, as the middle-of-the-road folks peel off.

Generic predictions. Next year, just change the date. Wow, this is easy!
