I would love to hear one of these victim-blamers explain why a woman would go to the authorities and complain of consensual sex.

There’s no motive to do that at all. Period. If a woman consented to sex and regretted it afterward, she’d simply not have sex with that guy again or recommit to her purity vow or something like that, then put the incident behind her and move on. Even women who ARE raped don’t report it more than half the time, for fear of such victim-blaming reactions.

The FBI statistics show that there are fewer false reports of rape than any other kind of violent crime. A British study showed that most false reports involved cases of mental illness, someone other than the supposed victim “pushing” the accusation… or a victim who recants under extreme psychological pressure to do so.

Assuming that a woman’s response to regretted consensual sex is to accuse her partner of rape assumes that women are generally irrational, unfair, and vindictive as a gender.

The josh Duggar stuff has been rather trigger. It’s hard to see a homeschool grad soak it all in and become the image of our past.

  • Nea

I can’t type “to be fair” because there is no fairness in blatant discrimination. But I will point out that Josh’s current position and the bread and butter he and his father earn lie in toeing the far-right evangelical line 100%. If he ever deviates by a single line, he’s going to be cast into the outer darkness as a reprobate.. without any actual skills to earn any other living.

Josh is trapped by the Duggar name. I just can’t feel sorry for him because he is earning his coin with hatred.

  • Nea

I started listening to the Duggar speech, but about halfway in the ignorance of law and history made my brain try to crawl out my ear. “This is about freedom! that I want to take from fellow citizens” “He doesn’t know the law! whereas First and Fourteenth Amendments are just random syllables to me” “This country was founded on religious freedom! That’s why Puritans executed Quakers!

  • tulips

Ditto that. He’s trapped, his alternative is min wage and…unless he eschews all of his primary conditioning…that’s min wage unaided by assistance or even the hope of a loan to improve his circumstances. It’s a long shot, and his behavior is…ironic to say the least and unattractive for sure…then I remember that he is like….super young with no exposure at all to reality outside of these oppressive constructs. I haven’t given up completely yet.

  • Nea

Not only that, but by his lifestyle, HE has to be the sole earner for a wife and 3 kids (presumably more to come). If his wife grew up in this lifestyle, she’s equally unprepared to earn a living.

Is he learning any reality now, in his figurehead of a job? He can probably count enough to see that the rally wasn’t very big, but as long as there’s anyone there and his name is famous, his handlers will have no wish for him to meet any uncomfortable realities.

Although… considering the cooling of the Duggar fortunes, I wonder how much longer Josh will be valuable to his handlers. And then what happens to him?

  • Suzanne Harper Titkemeyer

Does anyone know if that’s his wife by his side? If so then Anna has had a nice restyle and looks like many up in DC.

  • tulips

I’m sure there is a small army of people responsible for seeing to it that he does not learn anything about reality outside of what his handlers say it is…still, I look at Joshua Harris (I kissed dating goodbye) and think you never know what a few more years will turn up. Josh Duggar is human, that dog collar may chafe yet. Too soon to know.

  • Saraquill

Is the woman in the red coat trying to stare red holes into his neck? The man in the hat also looks like a prop with moving eyes.

To Josh Duggar, I would like to say as a Native American, #$%^ you for invoking religious freedom as the foundation for our country. Forced conversions apparently mean nothing to you. @#$% you again for mentioning freedom in the context of denying rights and privileges to those who aren’t like you.

Bleh. Finishing said video makes me want to grab a friend or more of the same gender so that we can cuddle in front of him while flipping him off.

  • Allison the Great

It’s not even punishing emotion, it’s taking a child too young to reason and blatantly offering them something tempting so they can then be whipped for wanting it.

    I can’t upvote that enough.

  • Allison the Great

Of course I would expect nothing but hatred for the LBGT community from the likes of someone like Josh Duggar who has had that and other prejudices pounded into his brain since the day he was born. That does not surprise or shock me. Every time some state declares the ban on same sex marriage unconstitutional some right winger always does something to grab attention. Remember the hunger strike guy? I see that Josh Duggar is jut trying to get attention. What makes me happy is that his supporters (and by that I mean people present at the rally) are low in numbers.

The sexual misconduct stories do not surprise me. I knew that such things happen amongst uber Christians and I’m not surprised that they mishandled the cases and treated the women the way they did.

What really terrified me was the story about Christian Sharia law. I’ve been following the Dominionist/Reconstructionist/Seven Mountains/Quiverfull stories for quite some time, and I’ve always found their vision for America to be extremely frightening. Every time someone who believes in these things gets elected, America as a nation loses. We lose empathy, and we lose on fronts such as education, women’s rights, funding for scientific endeavors, and we lose so much more. They’re turning this country into an ugly, terrifying place.

I am an agnostic that is more atheist leaning, but it seems to me that if there were such a thing as God, I don’t think he’d be anything like what these people say he is. The seem to be worshipping Satan instead, only they call him God. These people are not Godly in any sense of the word. They spread hate, suspicion of their neighbors, discourse, they’re war mongers and chauvinists.

  • Lauren Borrero

You know I am conservative but I in no way support Sheria Law. It should never be used in America, Ever.

  • Lana

Agree, and it’s sad. They don’t know how to struggle and start from scratch like the rest of us. Because guess what: there are a lot of struggling parents in community colleges, working long hours to make ends meet while they get their education. The homeschool-movie star lifestyle comes at a price. I hope Josh friends Frank Schaeffer. Frank knows what it is like to be a son of a famous Christian, make a lot of money off of it, and become an ass at the same time. If Josh has saved any of the profits he makes from the show, it could give him a buffer while he got an education.

  • Nea

Do any of the children get a penny from the show? I thought it all went to either feed/clothe the entire family, or into dad’s pocket.

  • Trollface McGee

The anti-gay activists are losing – badly – in courts and in public opinion and they know it, so they’re desperate. It’s somewhat amusing to watch.

“The seem to be worshipping Satan instead, only they call him God.”
Exactly. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard “Satan is the father of lies and he’s deceiving everyone that doesn’t agree with me,” while they’re worshipping the qualities of God that include oppression, slavery, genocide, murder, abuse, torture, rape – that doesn’t sound much like benevolent father, more like horrific evil villain.

  • tulips

I don’t know that he gets a nickel of it. His parents were pretty celebratory in their public “LEAVE AND CLEAVE!” rhetoric in which leaving and cleaving means that you do live in Dad’s dumpy rental and run a used car lot on Dad’s property but does not mean that you personally get compensated for the years of your own life that have been used for profit on a TV show.

  • Lana

Josh is filmed separately. So I doubt the parents paid him in the past, but ethically the Tv Show would have to pay him directly. There is no way they could get away without paying him unless Josh said don’t pay me. And he is not in every episode so it’s not a ton. But it could be enough to buy a house in cash.

  • Nea

Soooo… the point is to have as many babies as possible, hand them off to the other children to raise, pound them if they do anything that makes your life at all difficult (including reaching developmental milestones) and then kick the boys out of the house ASAP? This is what constitutes a loving family?

  • Nea

Kinda gonna stand by my original comment, though, that he has no marketable skills outside the camera and the name. You’re right; if he’s been filmed alone he should be the one being paid… but how long will he be considered film-worthy?

  • Lana

No disagreements. He stopped high school at 16.

  • Nea

One of the things that grinds my teeth about the Duggars is their subtle false witness. No, their outright lie that it’s their faith and homeschool program that has brought prosperity to their lives, and thus it’s possible for everyone else to be able to have all the nice things provided for TV, up to and including a high-powered lobbyist job with zero education or experience.

  • Catherine

As an aside, did Joshua Harris ever get married? I remember his book was popular when I was in college even though he wasn’t much older than me.

  • tulips

Not long. He’s not conventionally attractive, particularly intelligent, well educated, well spoken, or at all interesting. No malice intended, he was nominally marketable when he was younger (before reaching adulthood when it was all potential and promises) but his stock plummeted more or less immediately after reaching adulthood.

  • tulips

Yes, agreed…in fact it’s pretty much the only reason I have any interest in them at all. Such a dangerous lie to spread. And the very real lives ruined are all just cannon fodder for the cause of those at the top of the pyramid scheme.

  • Independent Thinker

A hairstylist or plumber has a higher level of educational attainment than Josh Duggar. I wouldn’t ask my hairstylist or plumber for legal advice. The same goes for Josh Duggar. Law schools are invented for a reason.

  • Independent Thinker

Going to college as a husband and father takes as special person. Someone dedicated, humble, open minded, eager to learn, and accepting of a diverse community. Those aren’t exactly the characteristics Josh Duggar conveys thus far.

  • Independent Thinker

There are people who work at my local Starbucks more educated and more qualified to work in DC than any of the Duggars.

  • Independent Thinker

That doesn’t look like Anna to me.

  • Independent Thinker

Don’t forget about blanket training. Apparently, that makes a happy family as well.

  • gimpi1

Do you support restricting access to birth-control, granting favor to Christian religious expression, or restricting people’s actions based on notions of “sin” rather than causing harm. If so, you do support Sharia Law, you just support a conservative Christian variety.

  • Nea

Basically, anything that makes kids act like robots so you don’t ever have to actually parent makes for a happy family.

  • Nea

The name’s still famous. It’s the only thing he has to milk…
