Today World Magazine posted about the internet wide discussions involving their article on homeschooling and child abuse – Homeschool Debate: How To Keep A Few Bad Apples From Spoiling The Bushel. You remember this article, right? This is the same piece that took something our SASBN member Heather Doney said out of context to change the meaning somewhat and also the article where HSLDA was allowed to get away with claiming only a few were homeschooling to hide child abuse and those few were ‘fake homeschoolers’
The article was the usual white-washed denial of a problem that typically seems to occur in Christian Fundamentalist Evangelical circles. Circle the wagons, claim a wide-spread problem is merely an untrue subset so that you don’t have to actually do anything to deal with it. Rather than facing the problem and actually taking steps to expose this kind of abuse, they’re claiming it’s only ‘fake homeschoolers’
Today’s posting to clarify what Heather Doney said, what HSLDA said and the importance of this issue was really not helpful. They merely stood by their predetermined stance and said they did nothing wrong. World Magazine – The Debate Over ‘Homeschool Debate’
The piece was written by Marvin Olasky editor, who also just happens to also be employed by Patrick Henry College, which was founded by the head of HSLDA, Michael Farris. How these guys think they have any credibility is beyond me considering how incestuously lock stepped they all are. Having Olasky is like having a fox guarding a henhouse with feathers surrounding him, a chicken wing or two hanging from his mouth all the while he’s assuring everyone that “Everything is fine! No need for concern here.”
The problems with homeschooling and the debate over those that use it to cover up child abuse will never be taken seriously or properly resolved as long as the same repressive guys that tell homeschooling families to never allow CPS in their homes are guiding the dialogue. World Magazine has proven they are disingenuous, not very interested in protecting the innocent and not at all interested in the truth. Another reason not to read World Magazine. The fight for safety in the homeschooling environment is not over, but they’ve made it obvious that they cannot be part of the solution. They’d have to learn to be honest first.
