by Nancy Campbell of Above Rubies – The True Light

In which Nancy links lack of light to rebellious disobedient children.

Without God we live in darkness. He is the one who said, “Let there be light: and there was light” (Genesis 1:3). Jesus is the Light of the world. He is “THE TRUE LIGHT,WHICH LIGHTS EVERY MAN THAT COMES INTO THE WORLD” John 1:9). Every person who is born into this world is without excuse regarding their relationship with God. Every new baby is born with a God consciousness, a light from God our Maker. We have a conscience that knows what is good and evil. This only comes from God.

Proverbs 20:27 says “The spirit of man is the candle (light) of the Lord.” Have you noticed that when a new baby is born into a family that there is a heavenly atmosphere about the home? There is an “awe” that we only experience with a new babe. I believe we are experiencing a new light from heaven. I think this is why little children are so open to God. Recently I watched my little three-year old grand-daughter sing all day about how Jesus is in her heart and how she loves God.

Why then do many walk in darkness? The answer is in John 3:19-21. We are all born with a light from God, but we can either push back the light or open up more and more to the light. It is a privilege for children to be born into a home where parents love God. These children have an opportunity to open up more and more to the light. In an ungodly home, the light with which they are born can be gradually extinguished or even smothered completely.

I believe that every time we say Yes to God and obey the prompting of His Holy Spirit within our hearts, we experience more light in our lives. Every time we say No to God and are disobedient to the Word, we accept darkness. Teach your children this principle, dear mother. Teach them that saying Yes to you and Yes to God will bring them to more and more light (Proverbs 4:18). Teach them that when they say No to you and No to God’s ways, their minds and hearts will cloud with darkness.

Job 18:5-56 says, “Yes, the light of the wicked shall be put out, and the spark of his fire shall not shine. The light shall be dark in his tabernacle, and his candle shall be put out with him.” I don’t want it to be dark in my home. I’m sure you don’t want it to be dark in yours either. Let’s open our hearts and minds MORE AND MORE to the light of God. Begin each day by praying, “Oh Lord God, please flood my mind, my heart, and my home with your light, today. Amen.”

One of my favorite Scriptures is Proverbs 4:18: “The path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth MORE AND MORE unto the perfect day.”

First, the CP blogosphere habit of jumping all over the Bible to prove a point is both incredibly annoying and shows questionable understanding of Biblical literature. But that’s nothing new, really.

The third paragraph is a great example of taking set of Bible verses and twisting the meaning beyond any reasonable conclusion. I bet Nancy on some level knows this because she doesn’t actually quote John 3:19-21.

John 3:19-21 (NSRV) is ” And this is the judgment, that the light has come into the world, and people loved darkness rather than light because their deeds were evil. For all who do evil hate the light and do not come to the light, so that their deeds may not be exposed. But those who do what is true come to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that their deeds have been done in God.”

    Here’s Nancy’s take:
Why then do many walk in darkness? The answer is in John 3:19-21. We are all born with a light from God, but we can either push back the light or open up more and more to the light. [Up to this point, my quibbles are fairly minor and more theological – read “academic” and “unlikely to affect the lives of people” ]
It is a privilege for children to be born into a home where parents love God. These children have an opportunity to open up more and more to the light. In an ungodly home, the light with which they are born can be gradually extinguished or even smothered completely. [This is where Nancy jumps off the rails. The verses she quotes have no direction on child-rearing. In fact, the verses are located at the end of the story of Nicodemus which is about the importance of seeking God as an adult, not a child.]

Proof-texting: Annoying as hell and sloppy.

Another example of the fundgelical claim that “You’re pointing out the logic gaps in my reasoning because you secretly KNOW the True Christian™ eschatology is true!”

Its first recorded use is in Romans 1:19-21. It was begging the question then, and it’s begging the question today.

As an experiment, I think I’ll pick a random Bible passage and see if I can Nancyise it. Zephaniah Ch1 (http://www.kingjamesbibleonline.org/Zephaniah-Chapter-1/) because… hey, a passage I’ve never heard of before and it’s God being all pissy against false profits prophets? Why not.

“And it shall come to pass in the day of the LORD’S sacrifice, that I will punish the princes, and the king’s children, and all such as are clothed with strange apparel.”
Mothers! Are you dressing your children in the clothes of the world? Or do you take the time to prepare them to be Godly examples of righteousness. Or are you too tired to take the time, to carefully iron your childrens’ underpants. Do you want God to see the wrinkles in your son’s y-fronts, bringing him fibre by fibre closer to Darkness?

“Therefore their goods shall become a booty, and their houses a desolation: they shall also build houses, but not inhabit them; and they shall plant vineyards, but not drink the wine thereof.”
Mothers! Do you drink wine? If so, you are bringing down the wrath of God on your house. And if you are not drinking wine, you are rejecting Jesus’ precious gift of wine at the feast. Do you want to be an Indian giver? Does that make you look Holy in the eyes of God?

Which brings me to the most comforting part of this scripture. The warmth of God’s wrath is Joyful exuberance to a mother’s heart! “I will consume man and beast; I will consume the fowls of the heaven, and the fishes of the sea, and the stumblingblocks with the wicked; and I will cut off man from off the land, saith the LORD.”

If Campbell wants a source of light for her family, they certainly aren’t getting it at home.

  • My sarcastic comment is if she wants a ‘light source’ maybe she should invest in some of those new LED bulbs. They are quite illuminating.

Oh that reminds me – I was going to have a glass of wine before I go to bed!
