Okay, so the quoted part of the title was factually uttered by the Beatles John Lennon way back in 1966 and not by Jim Bob Duggar. Here’s the entire John Lennon quote, posting it because in the context of the Duggars, Jesus and popularity it’s interesting. John Lennon was seriously off when he claimed that Christianity would die and disappear. It has only strengthened on the fundamentalist side.
“Christianity will go,” Lennon said. ”It will vanish and shrink. I needn’t argue about that. I’m right and I’ll be proved right. We’re more popular than Jesus now. I don’t know which will go first, rock ‘n’ roll or Christianity. Jesus was all right but his disciples were thick and ordinary. It’s them twisting it that ruins it for me.”
The religious right of the 1960s took Lennon’s words as some sort of hateful devil-worshiping threat instead of what they actually were, the observations of a young man working in the music industry. Lennon took a lot of flack for his words and had to explain himself. Didn’t do much good, the Beatles were still vilified for the remarks in the American Bible Belt for many years.
Lennon said in a separate press conference. “I’m not saying we’re better or greater, or comparing us with Jesus Christ as a person, or God as a thing or whatever it is. I just said what I said and was wrong, or was taken wrong, and now it’s all this.”
He continued his explanation. “If I’d have said television is more popular than Jesus, I might have got away with it,” he said. “In reference to England, we meant more to kids than Jesus did, or religion at that time. I wasn’t knocking it or putting it down I was just saying it as a fact and it’s true more for England than here.”
Here we are, forty eight years later, and the Duggar family patriarch and others in the family routinely utter worse things, particularly about things they know nothing about, such as the restroom habits of transgendered folks, comparing abortion to the Holocaust and who or what a sexual predator is just to name a few. No protest, or at least no protest until the petition to remove the Duggar family’s television show, ’19 Kids and Counting’, from the air. Perspective makes the difference, if the Duggars were, say, the Ozzy Osbourne family, these statements would bring them under fire, but as the darlings of the religious right they’re never censured for their more offensive utterances.
Jim Bob Duggar finally acknowledged the petition to cancel the television show and takes it as a sign from God that they were super-righteous. From Crushable – Jim Bob Duggar Cares More About Ratings Than He Does About Jesus At This Point
“They won’t succeed. Our show is the number one show on TLC. It’s a small group creating this fuss. All it has done is give us more exposure.”
Wow dude. When people ask ‘What Would Jesus Do?’, the answer isn’t typically that he’d cite the numbers on his reality show and basically laugh your face, right? I’m pretty sure I didn’t miss that part. But guys, it gets even better. I had to double check that Jim Bob’s next sentence actually came out of his mouth and not from a Saturday Night Live sketch, because it’s that insane. Check it out:
“God is expanding our borders through the national media.”
GOD LOVES OUR FACEBOOK. And I guess He’s ready for the Duggars to have the internet now, and television, even though He withheld it from them for so long! I think I’m finally learning the Duggar version of The Bible — anything that puts more eyes on TLC and makes the family more money seems to be a-okay! Even when it’s homophobic! What a great learning experience this has been for all of us!
He went on to brag that ’19 Kids and Counting’ was the number one show on The Learning Channel, which is sort of like bragging that you are a big big fish in a tiny pond. It is mostly meaningless in the real word. Like bragging you sell more used cars than anyone else in your town and you are the only used car dealer in town. What’s his competition? Shows like “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo” and “The Little Couple”
Here’s what my Duggar Christmas wish is for the holidays. I want Jim Bob Duggar to keep talking, keep talking to the media, keep flapping his gums, keep lecturing at churches and schools. The more words the merrier. Because the more he speaks, the more his true thoughts emerge and the more morally squishy his ideas sound. The general public will see that their lifestyle is being driven by hate and fear without much real regard for the ideas of Jesus. May that day come soon!
Matthew 12:34 “ Brood of vipers! How can you, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.”
